Driving instructor killed at crash black spot crash

SHATTERED family and friends of road-crash victim David Galestine have spoken of the irony that the experienced driving instructor was killed in a crash with young drivers.

Mr Galestine, 68, died when a high-powered Ford Falcon XR6 carrying six young males, including one in the boot, slammed into his Hyundai Getz in South Perth on Friday night.

He had been pulling out of a driveway in South Tce at 10.30pm when the allegedly speeding Ford ``T-boned'' his small hatchback.

It is understood the Ford had been travelling at up to 140km/h in a 60km/h zone when the crash happened at the known black spot.

Locals said there had been two other near misses at the intersection in the hours before the fatal crash.

Mr Galestine had dinner with close friend, Chan, 29, in the hours before the fatal crash.

Chan, who did not want her surname published, said she knew instantly her friend had been involved in a crash when she heard a loud ``bang'' seconds after they said goodbye.

``I just found him in the car and he was unconscious,'' Chan told The Sunday Times yesterday. ``I tried to wake him. I shook him and he opened his eyes and said `love you' before he closed his eyes and his head dropped forward.

``He was such a lovely man. So generous and so kind.

``All his friends loved him. We had the best times together.

``I know I lost someone who I loved, but blaming people is not going to bring him back.

``That is a very, very dangerous place. You just can't see around the corner.''

Mr Galestine died on the way to Royal Perth Hospital.

Several males in their late teens and early 20s, who had been in the Ford, were said to have been joking as they sat on the verge waiting to be interviewed by police.

Their laughter ceased when they were told of the death by Major Crash Squad Sen-Constable Adrian Callaghan.

The driver, a 19-year-old from Applecross, was taken into custody to be interviewed and have a blood-alcohol sample taken.

Yesterday, a unidentified family member posted a message on www.perthnow.com.au, expressing the irony of Mr Galestine having taught teenagers to drive and then being involved in a fatal crash with young drivers.

``These kids who drive these revved-up cars are never going to learn,'' the family member wrote.

``They are just lucky, this time round, that they are all still alive and able to talk about it. When is someone going to do something? Last night my family went to sleep with father, husband, brother, son and my uncle. We cannot say that today.''

One witness, who did not wish to be named, said he saw the Ford's four doors open and five men get out before one opened the car's boot to release a sixth.

``The (Falcon's) driver was saying `Oh no, oh no, what have I done?','' another witness said.

Meanwhile, another person died after a truck rollover at 8.40am yesterday on the Coalfields Highway near Collie.

In a separate crash yesterday, a man was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital with head and chest injuries after his car slammed into a tree on the Great Southern Highway between Perth and York.

Another senseless road tragedy, what can WA do to stop the carnage? Have Your Say

yeah mage n sareve.. too many bloody hoons on the road. Perth is just too quiet that's why you get all these young people doing silly and stupid things.

Chances are you're in either of these places during the weekend -

a. in a pub or club getting piss drunk

b. out in the streets or in some national park area racing till the coppers choppers come after you

c. in the local casino

d. eating out

e. having threesome sex (my ex neighbour was a horny prick - I can attest to that)

f. smoking pot

g. having kopi in some swanky spot with swanky cars parked in the lot

h. getting fat eating eating eating eating eating

For starters, try earthcore which is a dance music festival - one word - kicks zoukout ass

www.earthcore.com.au

It is traditionally held at Mt Disappointment but I believe the venue has been changed due to fire hazard. Try it if you can.
