just go light with your foot and the gear should be shifting up to 5th eventually as you pick up speed.

Try pushing the gear knob to the left and hold, it should indicate the gear it's in. Sometimes it may get pushed to drop one gear, you need to play with it to get the feel.

Push and let go drops or ups the gear, push left and hold (don't let go) will show current gear, then let go.

This is what I experienced in my 5 speed W203.

Think if push left and hold it would drop to a lower gear to allow for effective overtaking. Try it before and so far always gave me d2, haven't seen d3 yet so I may be wrong but confirm will drop gear if push and hold. W204.

Mine is C180 7G-Tronic.

If push to the left briefly, it will switch from auto to manual mode, gear seems remain the same.

If push to the left and hold, it will switch from auto to manual mode and drops gear/gears for a more spirited overtaking.

Don't think I have tried at 100 km/h, dropping gear will certainly bring rpm up.

My observation with the 5 speed W203 was 3rd gear match 50 to 60 km/h, a speed that I will get into before pushing left to 3rd gear without abrupt change in rpm and jerking. I used this as a guide to chiong down Sheares Bridge to Rochor without braking on the slope.

Five speed on "manual or paddle shifts" - D1, D2, D3, D4, D

7 G-tronics on "manual or paddle shifts" - D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D

Engine over rev protection is automatic i.e U keep reving say on D3 and before U hit red line it will automatically shift into D4

To check - your engine idling in P or N mode - step on the gas pedal U will never hit redline :)

Go NSHY Start in "manual or paddle shifts" put into D1 and keep stepping on the gas pedal till it hit D4 by itself - fun :) D is for overdrive gear i.e save petrol

Cheers

I tried also. Gearshift and paddle shift same - will hold in the gear you select

IMHO

Dun think it's a good idea to wack your ride to the max by "redline" it on each gear from D1.

If U really want to hoot it, put it on D1 to hoot it to max bhp rpm should be around >5k rpm & continue it shifting in each year till U reach D4 for 5 speed & D6 for 7 speed! :)

Btw high speed high rpm also equate to higher wear!

Driving the FL C180K.

I shift right does not indicate anything. I shift left will bring me down by one gear and RPM will rise, then i can see which gear i am on e.g. D3 or D2. but then i have to upshift again to my orignial gear, to lower the RPM. To revert the manual mode back to auto mode, i will shift right and hold till D appears again (does not matter which gear i am on).

Looks like you like beer and had a memorable trip in Hokkaido.

that's a place i plan to go but just have not committed time and money. actually i was at a jap restaurant for a company dinner, and the only best thing i had was Sapporo beer.
