Transport operator SMRT’s chief executive officer Saw Phaik Hwa announced her resignation from the corporation on Friday afternoon.

In an SMRT filing with the Singapore Exchange, the 57-year-old's resignation is dated effective Friday, with the reason cited being "to pursue personal interests".

Saw held her post of president and CEO of the company since 3 December 2002, according to the filing. On Friday, she held in excess of 1 million ordinary shares in SMRT Corporation Limited, as well as some 14 directorships with its subsidiary companies.

A statement from SMRT says that its board of directors has accepted Saw's offer, and that one of its members, Tan Ek Kia, will assume interim responsibilities for SMRT's management, with particular focus on rail operations, as the board searches for a new CEO.

"The Board recognises the importance of this transition period, and this is why Tan Ek Kia will provide executive leadership while a search is underway for Phaik Hwa's successor," said SMRT chairman Koh Yong Guan.
