U Bulb or I Bulb??

Found this interesting infro. Lets argue till the cow come home.

Halogen = Standard and very poor especially with projector lens.

Xenon = Often confused with HID, extreme Type filament lamps are filled with Xenon gas which helps them burn brighter and they are far better as a replacement to the standard lamps.

HID = High Intensity Discharge and are far superior in light output to Halogen or Xenon not suited as retrofit in standard reflector lamp units as the beam pattern is all wrong and the produce more glare than useful light, hence they are always used with projector lights.

The HID lamps provide a wide even beam of light, some people don't like them as the beam is so well defined at the cutoff point it makes it look quite short, in reality, side by side, the HID is far superior to the Xenon filament lamps.

Wiki Headlamps

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headlamp

HID (xenon) light sources

Xenon projector low beam headlamp illuminated on a Lincoln MKS.High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps produce light with an electric arc rather than a glowing filament. The high intensity of the arc comes from metallic salts that are vapourised within the arc chamber. These lamps are formally known as gas-discharge burners, and produce more light for a given level of power consumption than ordinary tungsten and tungsten-halogen bulbs. Because of the increased amounts of light available from HID burners relative to halogen bulbs, HID headlamps producing a given beam pattern can be made smaller than halogen headlamps producing a comparable beam pattern. Alternatively, the larger size can be retained, in which case the xenon headlamp can produce a more robust beam pattern.

Automotive HID lamps are commonly called "xenon headlamps", though they are actually metal halide lamps that contain xenon gas. The xenon gas allows the lamps to produce minimally adequate light immediately upon powerup, and accelerates the lamps' run-up time. If argon were used instead, as is commonly done in street lights and other stationary metal halide lamp applications, it would take several minutes for the lamps to reach their full output. The light from HID headlamps exhibits a distinct bluish tint when compared with tungsten-filament headlamps.

This is one reason that I opted for the ILS during booking of my car, other than for the looks.

I will probably need to spend another $400 for a pair of 6000k white bulb to complete the look.

My option will be Xenon as i do hv option to change the bulb to higher k. Aparts from this, i m worries free from warranty, LTA inspection & TP etc. A decent pair of 6000k can cost less than $250. Stock xenon should be 4300k.

As for HID is the reverse except for the pricing. A cheapo set cost less than $150 with installation.

Halogen!! i used it mainly on high beam for most of my ride.

The lastest in-thing is LED, do check out the new model like CLS class. I installed LED for my fog, side indicator light & nos plate too. In the past, LED are confine to interior lighting, down the road most likely all car lighting will be replaced by LED!!

Unker old record play again! U can get D1S for $100+ or fake Philips HID after mkt H7 for $100+ or unknown brand for $90.

Remember the term outgassing of cheap HID bulbs. It's ok if U dun keep your ride long.

2 to 3 yrs of useage sign of outgassing screwing up your headlamps will appear.

Amitahba!

No brand <$200 so claim with GE or Philips OEM burner.

imhccbo! Philips has no such problem and my cheap Korean HIDs had screwed up my Prado headlamps.

If pHilips no good Benzline dare charge U $500 when U can get a cheap D1S for <$200.

Unker rest his case!

I've been using non-Philips aka cheapo D1S for more than 2 years. So far no outgassing or SMLJ. Maybe because I'm Heng! I still love the 8000K look! Btw, the original bulbs in my car is Osram and not Philips.

I have to agree about getting a good xenon bulb. When I installed my xenon many years ago, a pair of Korean no brand bulb cost $200 while the Philips one cost $400. I went with the Philips, heart pain one time only.

My xenon light lens is still as transparent as new without getting blur after so many years.

Osram also make good bulbs!

Their Xenon/HID also no cheapo!

U Heng after 2 yrs! 1 to 2 weeks see nothing!

Projector lens also see nothing even got outgassing!

Looks like outgassing is = farting created by Philips & maybe Osram to frighten people to buy their bulbs.

I guess i m Heng too. My previous CLC cheapo $100 HID didn't give out free gases on my headlight & foglight. So as this cheapo D1S since April also no issue at all. But Unker warning must take note before you decide to go for cheapo products. Coz not everyone as Heng as us :).

Damn tempted to buy from one of the bro who put up his used W204 original bi-xenon headlights set for sale and that's quite sometime back....But think I am fated to continue the cheapo set.

Now the cheapo becomes mai-wan-lor.....couldn't believe it that I have used for 2+ years liao and the headlights' projector housing and reflector still swee swee. The scary part is the cheapo xenon/HID set costs only $100+ bucks!

Me more heng and cheapo than NewC180 and blackmerces is the cheapo king! whahahahaha
