A Japanese national charged for molesting a waitress had his case compounded by making a $74,000 donation to charity, The Straits Times reported today.

Tange Tomio, 39, had allegedly lifted up the skirt of the 28-year-old woman and stroked her thigh at a Havelock Road bar on Nov 23, 2010.

Tomio, a manager in an oil firm, made a donation to the Singapore Red Cross Society in the victim's name to have the offence compounded, ST said.

He also made an open court apology for any distress or inconvenience which his actions caused her.

The prosecution did not object to the settlement, the daily reported.
