Hi all,

Need your advice. I am thinking of getting a GPS unit for my car but need advice on which unit is the best for my purposes. I've listed some things I think is important to me below. Hope you guys can help out.

1) 5" screen cos' I'm going blind liao.

2) bluetooth phone connection so I don't have to try and read by iPhone screen to call and loud speaker so I can hear caller.

3) Traffic jam avoidance - is there such a thing?

4) fits nicely on my SLK windscreen and won't fly off when I drive topless. haha!

5) unlimited map updates and rentable maps for overseas trips.

any other features that might be useful?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've used Garmin for a long time, since the Nuvi 300 model till the latest one I'm using now, Nuvi 2575. I like this model as it has integrated camera and acts as a driving recorder, to protect against fradulent insurance claims.

You'll need to get the additional FM traffice receiver for traffic news and avoidance.

I'm driving an E-cab with the top down most of the time, so far it hasn't flown off yet. :)

The good thing about Garmin is the strong community support, and multiple map options, all of which are very frequently updated.

Thanks to Yap and Blackmercs. I am thinking of a cheaper solution than to change my ICE to a bulit-in headunit or Command.

Thanks to Audifreak and Cmsoh. I am keen on a Garmin. Which model would you recommend?

Does anybody know if the "Live Traffic" advice and re-routing that Holux claims to have is also available on the Garmins?

Garmin came out with a new Nuvi that can double as video recorder to record what's ahead during driving as well as a GPS. You may want to explore this model in Garmin website.

Check out the Nuvi 2575R, not the cheapest GPS unit around, but packed with features.

As explained, Garmin also has the FM traffic receiver for live traffic updates and routing. Basically an icon will pop up telling you the traffic condition, and you can opt to reroute. You can also set it to automatically avoid traffic situations.

Try Garmin products. The singapore distributor rents out map as well.

The newer gamins all have buetooth, speaker, voice recognition etc..

Yes very useful when travel for short trips. rental for maps only $2 day min 7 days.

But only applies for set bought thru the authorized distributor.

Where do you rent from? I've got my set from a shop @ funan and need to rent for an upcoming trip overseas, but they charge $30 flat rate for rental..no daily rates

U can rent from Navicom - agent for Garmin.

I used this one when I last went to Gold Coast.

http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/

Generally most of the community maps are pretty good, I self-drove in Gold Coast using this, and never got lost once.

Also it helps if you check the address here first, and reference the maps in your GPS to confirm its correct first, and store all the bookmarks in the GPS for easy reference.
