My first Merc (W124)

Hi everyone,

As I have gleaned much information from this forum (and hence the decision to take the plunge to buy), I feel obliged to introduce myself - or rather my car :)

Viewed the car on Wed, did the LTA name transfer this morning. Everything went smoothly. Car is a 1993 200E (should be 16V, given its YOM) W124, maroon/red colour which I find rather rare. Comes with original VRN which number any Chinese towkay will like. Helps me save money too as the 4D system bet for this number was sold out today and tomorrow.

It drives like a dream notwithstanding the well-known "leisurely" pick-up from standstill. Had a scare today after coming out from a junction. Floored the accelerator but car took its own sweet time to build up speed. As many have said, once the speed picked up, the beast is awakened.

Before purchasing, I took special notice of all the 200E that I came across. They did not look big. Even on the day of the test drive of my car, it did not look big. However, after it officially becomes mine, I find the car damn long... I usually park head-in at the sheltered carpark at my home, but with the Merc, I am unable to park it in one smooth movement due to the long bonnet. Have to reverse a bit before moving in.

As parallel parking is not one of my strengths, I look forward worryingly to my first parallel parking.

Insurance premium could be lower (37 yrs old, 50% NCD); it costs me $900 p.a. for 3rd party coverage.

Some minor issues are present, which I will ask for advice in "E Class" section of the forum. Sorry for the long virgin post.

Hi mushigen and welcome to SGMERC. It's always a pleasure to hear from a fellow MB owner/enthusiast. We're also chuffed that the information available here has served you well in the purchase process.

I think just a couple more days with the tank and you'll be fine with the way the car handles and feels. You'll be doing parallel and 1 time reverse parking in no time at all.

If you got any issues, you may wish to write to our fellow W124 owner & founder of SGMERC keltanky. :)

Welcome! :) Glad that you have found this forum to your benefit! It's also a great place filled with extremely nice and cheeky gentlemen! Hahaha. Do join us in our monthly GTG on the last Sundays and the ad-hoc meet-ups (la kopi + tcss sessions) if you are free! :)

The W124 is a great car. My father had one and it was the first car I drove back then when I first got my licence. After that, it was always an aspiration for me to have my own Mercedes. My dad said that once you drive a Mercedes, you won't ever want any other car. I've had my W204 for 6 months now and I'm "falling ever deeper in love with her" each passing day. Haha.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the warm welcome. Appreciate it.

I have posted a long list of queries in the E-Class section, hope you guys can provide some advice and pointers to me.

It is a pleasure to drive a classic car full of soul and character (and most importantly, spare parts) like the W124. I could have bought a used Camry for similar depreciation p.a. and expect fewer problems, but it would be such a boring experience; and I don't foresee myself smiling each time I crank the engine to life (although I am still trying to get used to starting the car with left hand and hope I get the key-twisting rotation correct; and releasing the handbrake with right hand and hope I don't accidentally pop up the bonnet, haha).

AA membership is being processed - hope I don't have to call them frequently. Will try to attend the La Kopi session to get to know you guys and my car better.
