Tick tick sound

Hi all,

I noticed that after I stopped my car, there is this weird "tick tick tick" sound that seems to come from the undercarriage, like some expansion or contraction of parts taking place. It will last for about 10mins.

Anyone knows what's going on ? Supercharger cooling down ?

I'm driving the C180K BE.

Thanks

likely it's hot metal cooling....all engines behave the same. If you go near a jet engine after it's run, there are a lot of ticking and crackling sound. These sound tend to be from sheet metal and steel parts such as manifolds, exhaust pipe, heat shields.....

My W203 has such sound too and I have never time it.....it supposed to be normal, I guess.:becky:

Bro...that's a characteristic of a Merc. I remember hearing this on my new 190E in 1993. When I went to C&C to complain, the SA laughed & said that's a characteristic of a Merc...I'm serious:) Actually, the sound from the fuel pump. Up till now, I still don't know why Merc made it this way. In fact, I enjoy hearing this tick tick sound in my garage after parking it.

I didn't really time it. I went back to the car after 10 mins and it's still ticking. I was worried that one day something might fall off due the daily expansion/contraction stress.

I was hoping it would go away after a while. Glad to know this is normal. Phew.

They should include in the fine print "Comes free with tick tick sound".

Didn't know it's a merc characteristic. My previous Jap ride never had this type of sound. I change to merc once it developed these "cracking" sound. But I guess maybe something is really broken. How ironical ! Ha ha.

I have this "tick tick" sounds too after I stop the car and turn off the engine. It comes from all 4 wheels. I suspect it's the brake hoses cooling down? Not sure, man...

Had the same problem with my car when coming to a stop with engine still running can hear a tick tick tick sound very soft but persistant, and audiable at night even my friends said so. Thot at first car was cold thats why the noise or some part of the exhaust knocking on the body but never found anything. Noise also kept going when car was nice and warm after a 20 min trip to town. Also coming from under the car towards the rear passengers. Took it to C&C 3 times also cant figure it out finally went to pandan loop and they found a regenerative valve defective making all that noise. Item was replaced and now all nice n quite.

Does that sounds like fan spinning hitting some object ? Very soft sound but pretty obvious ? Mine and my bro's sounds more like fast but soft " thud thud thud thud thud thud........ " noise from don't know where . Sometimes have sometimes don't . Irritating man ... :mmph:

Bro, is it a quick job to fix it? I just did my 1st servicing last week but forgot to bring this up to them. Looks like it's another trip to pandan. *sigh* Anyway, would you be so nice as to provide us with a complete description of the problem as per your job sheet? Many thanks!

Hi Calvin,

Not sure if the "sound" we're talking is similar. Mine had this tick tick sound after I stop the car and off the engine. Did not check while engine is running. It's like hot metal contracting and it last for a while. You hear yours only when the car engine is on ?

Mine could only be heard when engine was on. Different problem I think

Thanks for the clarification. Btw, how old is your ride and when did you think the valve started having issues ?

Wow, 3 months. I've just passed my 3 months of ownership and i don't hope to hear any sound other than the music from the stereo and the engine roar. Just checked today, and the crackling sound is there when the engine is on too. I guess it must be the heat or the fuel pump as one of the bros indicated.
