Thu, Feb 24, 2011

AsiaOne

The Singapore government has accepted recommendations made by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee.

The report was released at 3pm on Thursday, Feb 24 afternoon.

The committee has recommended that Singapore be carved out into 27 electoral divisions.

12 divisions will be Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) and 15 will be Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs).

SMCs

There will be 12 SMCs including 8 new ones:

Bukit Panjang

- Hong Kah North (new)

- Hougang

- Joo Chiat

- Montbatten (new)

- Pioneer (new)

- Potong Pasir

- Punggol East (new)

- Radin Mas (new)

- Seng Kang west (new)

- Whampoa (new)

- Yu Hua (new)

The four that remain from the previous elections - in 2006 - are Bukit Panjang, Hougang, Joo Chiat and Potong Pasir.

GRCs

There will be 11 Group Representation Constituencies consisting of five Members of Parliament (MPs) each.

They are Aljunied, Bishan - Toa Payoh, Choa Chu Kang, East Coast, Jurong, Marine Parade, Nee Soon, Sembawang, Tampines, Tanjong Pagar and West Coast.

Choa Chu Kang and Nee Soon were previously SMCs.

Marine Parade, Sembawang, and Tanjong Pagar used to have six MPs each.

Two GRCs - Holland-Bukit Timah and Moulmein Kallang will have four MPs each.

Two GRCs - Ang Mo Kio and Pasir Ris-Punggol - will have six MPs each.

There will be a total of 87 MPs, up from the current 84.

In the last GE in 2006, the boundaries report was released about 7 weeks before nomination day.
