Tell us what you like about your w204 1.6 kompressor BE, 1.8 c180 cgi etc here!

Let's me start first!

1. Handsome looks!

2. For it's segment, spacious interior.

3. Brand name that is top class.

Worth it or not, everyone has his/her own opinion.

But the reason i went for it when comparing with BMW 3er, Audi A4, Alfa 159, Ford Mondeo and Lexus IS250 ...

Audi A4 - front track FWD version, steering is numb. Multitronic is a big minus, OMV:Price ratio does not make sense. S-tronic only comes with quattro. But quattro fuel consumption is poor and not necessary in tropical Spore. Last but not least, personally, i am against Audi... end of story.

Lexus IS250 - Sat in the driver's seat... feels like a Toyota immediately. Went behind trying to sit in the rear passenger seat... cant get in without adjusting front seat. Open the boot, space is as premium as a hard top convertible .... closed the door and walk away.

Alfa 159 - Like the looks the most. Interior cramp, but still acceptable. Like the handling even though its FWD, BUT hated the feel of Selespeed. I know eventually i will get used to it , but .... anyway. If one day Alfa were to adopt Ferrari's or FIAT's dual clutch transmission, i will look at Alfa again.

Ford Mondeo - its spacious, it drives very well for a FWD.... as well as bimmer 3er and Merc C Klasse. 6 speeder is smooth. And its cheap. BUT, it comes with old school 2.3L which is not efficient, not powerful and i am sure it will gulp gas. OMV:Price ratio doesnt really make sense either.... but Regent was willing to negotiate. Ultimately, i walked away because it lacked badge snob appeal. Nothing wrong with the package except for the 2.3L engine, which is a real concern.

BMW 320i - OMV:Price ratio is very good (at that time), drives very very well. Damping is just right (i feel that its damping its even better than C Klasse ... but maybe because its on 16" standard whereas C is on 17"). White and Blue propellar badge appeal. BUT, steering is very heavy. turning circle is large. I feel like driving an F1 car when trying to U turn. No spare tyres ... and i dont like run flats. Run flat replacement cost is gonna be high. I'd prefer pay for a good set of performance tyres than mediocre run flats for the same price. And of course, 320i is made in South Africa.

C180K BE - Finally decided on this one mainly because, the overall packaging is better than 3er ... larger boot, 17" rims standard, SE highly negotiable, drives just as well as 3er... perhaps a little on the comfort side, but its fine for me. Made in Germany. 1.6/1.8 attract less roadtax. And lastly, the built quality feels like it'll last forever... 3er doesnt give me that feeling.

Ps. i actually also considered the Volvo XC60 .... but pity they didnt have the 2.0T Powershift then.... only T6 3.0 which is overkill.

Good write out mile!! Totally agreed with you except for the BMW steering & turning ratio. Most ex bimmer like me would prefer a heavy steering. When the first time I test drive the W204 sedan. I hate it, reasons is that the steering is too light, no feel at all, so I brought the CLC instead which steering is heavier. After driving my E class & I starts to appreciate this function, parking is a breezed. To me, Mercedes functions and features is superior except for the auto circulation function, is really a pain in the neck for city drivers.

Every 30 minutes got to press that circulation button! Once you start smelling the fumes from the outside! Quite a hassle but unless we're driving for an extended period or distance, 30 minutes for a trip should be more than enough! :)

I agree with your comment as I was ex bimmer as well. It took me a couple of days to get use to the steerling feel for the W204. I like the light steering when parking as well as when driving in most MSCP as the E90 would need a bigger turning radius.

The W204 and E90 are two different cars and IMO the E90 is about the driver and the W204 is a complete ownership. The features is better for the W204 compared to the E90. However, I still prefer the handling of the E90 and this is something that the rest of the automotive industry has yet to match.

I also hate the auto circulation function as well and I always forget the release the hand brake. One fetaure that I wish that the W204 1.6 BE has is the AUTO tilting of the side mirror which I find extremely helpful when parking.

One other thing is the "AH PEK" image that Merc has yet to overcome. A lot of my friends mentioned that I am still too young for the Merc.:Cry::Cry:

Overall, beside the handling of the car, I would cast my vote for the W204.

Auto tilting mirror function is available on C200.... reason its not available on C180 is because it doesnt have memory seat adjustment package.

If you check the 318i which does not have memory seats (some batches has), those also dont have mirror auto tilting function when reverse. It's all in the package.

Unfortunately, its true the Merc still project the old man image. Even my father asked me why i picked the Merc instead of Bimmer.

I have not met all of you, but I graduated from a Japanese ah beng car to merc. Maybe being mid 40s help. My colleagues too ask why I buy Ah Pek car, but then they clamour to sit in my car when we go out for lunch, I guess that says it all. The comfort and ambience.

Give me a E coupe and call me ah pek anytime. I don't mind.

Merc nowadays doesn't look ah pek anymore!

In fact I kind feel the 320 look and the new 5 really looking ah pek instead.

Probably the 7 is really nice.

Merc is making it's way back real strong, after the yuppies audi slowly realize that drl is just a drl.

My sentiments exactly bro. I remember my first test drive of the C class coming from a 320i - I was shocked by the steering, felt like something broke and the steering isn't connected to anything

The BMW steering feel I must admist is still top of the class, love the feel going through twisty roads.

Overall package though the C is better (looks, engine performance - comparing models at similar price points, space and features).

I still miss my mirror tilt function and having to press the air circulation just once every drive as opposed to every 30 min.

Steering

Must agree the steering is light as compared to other brands including jap brand. Its also lighter than the Civic FD that I used to own. However you would appreciate the lightness when making an u turn or parking at tight carpark space. I believe (correct me if i am wrong) the steering is speed sensitive, ie it would be "heavier" with higher speed.

Looks

Personally I dont think the W204 looks Ah Pek leh. I would say its looks better than the 3 series and its lasting. I was won bythe looks of A4 with DRL when it was first launched couple years back. I was like WOW WOW...But now, to me, it looks just like a normal saloon on the road, not really oustanding. Not the same for C Class, it stands out from the crowd, even now..

My 2 cents worth

I liked the A4 for its looks too when it first came out. Now, when I see an A4, it just looks ordinary to me. The C has a timeless appeal regardless of whether people still think it projects an "ah pek" image or not. For example, I was catching up with some ex-colleagues over dinner last night and we talked about cars. I mentioned I was driving a Mercedes now and immediately they said, "It's not you! So ah pek! You're more an Audi or a Beemer!" But I said my C180 doesn't look ah pek at all. In fact it looks very refined with a hint of sportiness. When they saw my car, they changed their mind and said, "Nice! Quite sporty looking and not ah pek at all! Merc jiu shi Merc! Quality is the best!" The kit and rims probably helped make the car look more muscular and sporty, I guess. But the point is, I would never regret getting this over the Audi or the BMW. Even if I'm just 30 this year. :)

Wonder anybody noticed that the Beemer E90 have crappy interior or make that interior materials & design?

Yes handling dept beemer trumps Merc on any given roads & at given time but it also have superb airconditioning which is a prerequisite in this farking place call sgp.

However most beemer drivers that i've come across thinks that they are the 'shit' or make that, their cars are 'the shit' with an atas look on their face which is very condescending.

As for Merc (especially the C Class), they are mostly more nondescript & may i add that they look more apologetic without any airs :becky:

As for áh pek', doubt so as more & More youthful owners are taking to mercs
