Different Grade of Petrol - 95 or 98

Dear All,

I would like to seek the opinions of owners for W204 for the types of petrol to be used for the car. I am driving a C180K and has been pumping Shell 98 since day 1 and I am wondering whether I should change to Shell 95. Prices of petrol are increasing and a couple of cents does not seems much but in the long run, there is still some saving. I am getting about 600 km per tank using Shell 98.

Thanks in advance for your valuable feedback.

I've been on Esso 5000 since day 1 and have been getting 680-730 km per tank. Mine's a C180 CGI. I think 95 octane is good enough.

Have a look at your petrol cap mine says 91ron or 95. Pumping anything abv that has little effect unless you wanna belive all the marketing hype that the petrol companies put out. BTW i get better milage on 95 then on vpower or 98 for that matter for some weird reason.

So far the majority favors 95!

I also pump 95 for my W212 unless shell got special promotion 98 price for VPower.....hahaha!

Like the Bros said - Petrol cap reads min Ron 91 - so Ron 95 should be good enough unless U have done a remap of your ECU, then more likely U will need 98.

Strangely, i have never pumped 95 in my C180K. Only Esso 98 or SPC 98 (and Petronas 97 when across the causeway).

I tried on 3 of my previous cars, comparing 98 to 95.... all 3 cars returned better mileage with 98 than 95. The difference is not that much, but about the same difference if i were to pump 95. So, if all things are equal, i'd prefer to pump better petrol in my car.

Having said that, i have never ever achieved 600km per tank with my C180K. The best i ever got was 580km. Regularly i get about 520-530km per full tank of about 63L. which is about 8.5km/L .... very strange.

Even on NS highway, i get about 10km/L at best.

Something wrong with my car?

I used to pump only 95 for many years.... recently went to Autospritz to tune my W211 and was told by Dennis to use 98 if I want to take care of engine for long while.

Got affected already... start pumping 98.... just close both eyes and pay the premium bah....

Thanks for all the replies ...

I am having mixed reactions and I have tried my first tank of Shell 95. As I have mentioned perviously, I have been using Shell 98 from Day 1.

My C180K is about 3 months old and I have been able to get at least 600 km for a full tank (till the warning lights appear).. Assuming that the car consume 60 lites for 600 km .... 10 km per litre. That is not great FC, but acceptable on local driving condition. IMO, any better than 10km/litre is a bonus.

I will update on mileage with this full tank of 95.

I was reading the comments everyone had... Is it juz me, I get good power and average mileage from exxon than from shell... I do 95 octane most of the time... Shell makes the car jerky with no push...

Caltex platinum is wat I pump in every 2 tank of 5000 exxon...

The Octane RON ...

was a grade for PETROL ....

89 ... 91 ... 95 ... 97 ... 98 ....

the flameable materials for Combustion ....

the higher RON like 98 will give a BETTER mileages and BETTER power respond ...

it helps to CLEAN the Engine Combustion Chamber and the exhaust system ...

I used to apply 97 and 98 .... one in awhile 95 ... because of the price ...

it works .... that was a BIG different ....

The RON ... is for the PETROL

for Beer ... is ALCOHOL

for beer are 5-8 % alcohol contains

for wine some are 15-18 %

but Brandy or Whiskey are Higher ... 40-45 %

but of course the HIGHER grade ... will get a BETTER and FASTER respond also ...

hope this helps ...

cheers ...

I totally agreed on the alcohol thing , the higher the % u get drunk faster which is faster responds ....cheers!!

Faster response means less distance as more energy is used to get the car pushed off the line and does not necessarily mean more milage. Higher Ron is more resistant to engine knock which occurs in cars with higher boost pressure

i Swear never to use Shell after my previous car was stalled in Penang (not C180K), and was told by mechanic about it. First thing he asked was, were you on shell petrol? ....

I was told, Shell 95 quality is not good. Esso, Caltex SPC are all ok... but not shell. Anyway, swear off Shell since that day 3 years ago.

Just filled up after my first tank of Sheel 95, I am getting poorer mileage compared to the Shell 98. Pumped another tank of Shell 95 and will update on the mileage after this tank.
