Alternative Key Case

If like me, you have trawled shopping malls and high fashion boutiques in search for the perfect key case that will fit our car keys, you will know that there are very few that fit, and those that do don't fit properly.

Our key has the hole on the side of the key but most of the key pouches have the metal pole that goes through the hole of our keys in the middle of the key pouch. That makes the wider top part of the key stick out of the case.

Those that don't stick out are usually too big for our key, hence there is enough material to cover it fully.

So I set out to find someone who can customise one for me.

Google + 2 minutes pointed me to a shop on the 4th floor of the Heeren called 310 Woodland.

Went there and browsed through their handmade collection of leather goods. Tried on some key cases which had the same problem. The poles that goes through the hole on the key are all in the centre of the key pouch.

Told the shop owner (Soh) the problem.

He said to me "You got a few minutes? I custom make one for you now"

I answered "Of course!".

He asked me to choose a leather. I choose a plain simple black one with a bit of visible grain.

A bit of cutting with a pair of scissors, a hole puncher and a mallet to punch in the buttons and in about 15 minutes, I had a custom key case that fit my key perfectly.

Here are some shots of him making the case:

And here is the result:

He pasted a piece of leather at the back of the metal button to prevent any scratching:

I can't be happier. No need to go through ebay, no need to wait (well, I did wait 15 minutes), relatively cheap, perfect fit...

So here's the rundown:

1) Shop is called 310 Woodland

2) It is located on the 4th floor of Heeren

3) The craftsman/shop owner is Mr Soh

4) I paid $45 for a custom made no frills black leather case without any stitching or fancy add-ons, which took 15 mins to complete

5) I asked him to trace a template because I told him I'm gonna post this and suspect many more people with the same key will be looking for him. He did.

6) You can choose any leather you like. But he did say can't be too thick. Snake skin, ostrich, calf, red, orange, blue, suede, distressed brown... You like it, he'll make it.

7) Go after 1.30pm. I went there at 12.30pm and the shop was still closed. Waited til 1.30pm before he arrived.

I did search the forum and even wrote to 2 ebay sellers and bargained.

I dunno about other people, but personally, I hate the embossed Mercedes logo on leather. I'm just not into it.

And the fussy metal hooks and rings and red stitching, not my cup of tea.

At the end of the day, I wanted one that fit my key perfectly and look exactly the way I want it to look. On top of that, it's cheap and there is virtually no waiting time.

So to me, it's a superior option.

Even if someone likes red stitching and the fancy hooks and rings, you can have it made like that. The only thing he can't do is the Mercedes logo.

So if the Mercedes logo is important, I guess this option is a no-go.

You guys/gals can check out those from " Braun Buffel". Very nice quality and in soft leather. Bought 2 of them. Fits really well! Btw, I am no salesman for them and was hunting high and low like everyone else!

I like Braun Buffel too, but hate the bull logo. I asked the sales girl whether can take out the logo, and of course I already knew the answer.

It'll leave a hole... So no-go for me.

Me anti-logo, haha.

Well, for those born under the sign of Taurus, I suppose it's another incentive to buy it. Ha Ha. I am a taurean btw. But it was not the bull which swayed me, but how well it fits the Merc key and so comfortable too! Made in Germany, just like our beloved Merc.
