A.B.S. ...... Anti-lock Brake System

here I will like to share with you all ... about the Mercedes-Benz A.B.S.system

I think is Good For the Benzer to refer ...

because some Benzer doesn't know what is this system actually

the A.B.S. Anti-lock Braking System ...

or known as Electronic Brake Slip Control ...

This ABS was one of the active safety elements of a vehicle

which can decisively reduce the risk of accident.

The Advantages For This Reason,

ABS is expected to meet the following demands:

. Higher Driving Stability

. Better Steerability

#~1 ... The driving stability of the vehicle should be assured while braking.

(The Wheel will not LOCKED by the brake force in the event of EMERGENCY stop)

#~2 ... The driving stability while maintaining full steerability.

(the Steering Wheel still able to turn when the Braking Applied)

When the Brake Pedal is excessively operated ...

an uncontrolled Braking System will result in the wheels LOCKING.

(FULL brake force built-up while FULL brake applied)

The A.B.S. will modify the braking pressure in the wheel brakes

to extent that the wheels do NOT lock (variable Brake Pressure)

the adhesion between the wheels and the road is optimally exploited.

Driving with A.B.S.

the MIL @ Malfunction Indicator Lamp with ABS symbol

in the instrument cluster (METER)

will lights up when the ignition is switched ON

it will goes out after the engine is started

(same as the BATTERY charge indicator lamp)

should the lamp FAIL to go out,

this could indicate LOW voltages in the ABS electrical system

or an open circuit in the current supply to the electronic parts

Once the vehicle has attained a speed of approx. 5km/h - 8km/h,

the ABS performance a selt test BITE (Built In Test Equipment)

the ABS MIL will light up if a FAULT is recognized.....

If the ABS problem assumes the form of a permanent fault,

then the fault will remains store in the ABS control unit

until the ignition is switched off (self reset for Model W124/W126/W129/W201 ...ect)

short periods of undervoltage in the vehicle's electrical system will NOT recorded.

the stand-by voltages to the ABS system was 11 volts ...

if the battery voltages remains below 11 volts after the

ignition has been swithed ON

and the vehicle has exceeded the 'test' speed,

the ABS will remain inactive until such time as the alternator raises the system voltage to above 11 volts.

Only Then the ABS MIL go OUT......

When the ABS symbol in the METER is On,

this signal indicates the ABS is inactive, NO working ...

the ABS will NOT operate when the vehicle's brakes are applied.

the conventional brake system (Normal Brake System) remains operational ...

the vehicle should be checked and repaired in a M/Benz service station ASAP.....

The ABS comprises the convertional braking system known up to now and the following additional components are:

~1 ... The hydraulic Unit

~2 ... The Wheel Speed Sensors

~3 ... The ABS Control Unit

~4 ... Electric Cable Harness with Overvoltage Protection Relay

FYI, the regullar problem we come across

The ABS warning light ON while Engine STARTED

Normally it was due to the faulty Electronic Components

exmp ...

Hydraulic Valve Relay , Overvoltage Protection Relay ,

LOW alternator Output , faulty ABS control unit ... etc

The ABS warning light ON while Vehicle Drive

Normally it was due to the faulty FRONT wheel Speed Sensor
