Petrol pump woes...

Hi all!

Just like to share this little bit of incident and hopefully can prevent another unfortunate event from happening to the rest of u.

Location: Shell Petrol kiosk next to Courts and opposite a church...guess where?

Incident: drove in to pump petrol. stopped the car, off the ignition and removed key (yes..mine is non keyless go:Cry:)....gave instruction to pump attendent for full tank top up and happily went into the retail section to enjoy the aircon. Locked my car on the way to the retail section.

after paying for the petrol, I returned to the car, unlocked and when I just got into the driver seat, a different pump attendant approached me asking if I want to pump...

Confused, I turned my head to look at my petrol cover while telling him I already pumped ..half-expecting to see my petrol cover return to original closed position. To my surprise, the cover was not closed fully.

I step out of the car to investigate and found out that the cover cannot close and 1st thing I suspect is maybe the locking mechanism was engaged and thus the cover cannot be returned to the correct position. so I did a couple of actions including locking and unlocking my car again, start and restart the engine...to no avail... as it was late and there are other cars lining up, I decided to drive off to investigate it at my own place (making sure the inner cover is tightly screwed in)

When I investigate it later, to my horror I found that the thin metal tab that sticks out of the fuel cover is bent into a U-shape and paint is flaking from the bent edge. That is the reason why I cannot latch back the fuel cover!

Luckily, I was able to use my thumb to bent it back straight and the cover functions correctly again albeit some flaked paint...

I suspect that the pump attendant was not able to push the fuel cover back in because I locked my car while he was filling it.... common sense will tell the attendant to wait until i come back and tell me the problem even if he dun know how MB fuel cover works....No... this pump attendant decides to use force to force my fuel cover back into the hole.... in the process bending my fuel cover tab.....

From now on, I shall be alittle more conscientious and fill my own petrol...:tsk:

This design from Benz is so stupid..... It should allow close not open the fuel cap when we lock the car.

When we lock the passenger doors when they are open does it also meant that the door cannot be closed??!!

Stupid German engineers

my wife's mini also works the same way.....and I suspect BMWs as well since they share quite abit of technology..... so maybe it's a german thing.

My last few jap rides have manual fuel cover unlock mechanism....so quite idiot proof:biggrin1:

well i always inform and train new PAs, to ask customers if dunno, dun ever use force to open or even close the fuel tab! so far no issues of customers complain.

hey bro vratenza, you got to inform that place's manager about your issue, cos dun think yours is the only 1 that PA had done it that way.. That PA got to have re-training la..

on one hand I dun want to get the PA into trouble since no major harm done...but on the other...he may continue doing it to other cars until someone complains....dilemma

Lucky for me, as I do my own top up!! Takes abt half an hour to complete for 58 liters :)

hmmm half hour from reaching the petrol station to leaving? Or purely pump petrol time? Abit long..last time i pump 55l only takes max 5 min. I usually pull trigger to max and lock it in position...stand abit further away to reduce fume inhalation until full tank.

Come to think about it the only irritating thing about pumping petrol myself is have to tell the PA I will DIY in 2 languages...haha.

My story also similar... no keyless and i happened to lock the car. Guess what, the car attendent just leave it as it is since cannot close. The best part: Never Inform me!!!!! So, let me drive while the cover is opened!!!

Some Tips in Pumping Petrol for members (who self-pump)

1) Put the nozzle fully in!

2) Pull the trigger to the 2nd position (not the max, reason - the pressure of the petrol splashing the nozzle sensor will come too fast too soon, meaning its not really full.)

3) When the 1st auto stop, manually pull trigger to pump till 2nd auto stop. Than STOP pumping - Its Full liao.. unless your fuel line is a V shape to the Fuel Tank (some cars are V-shape to Tank, my Prev W123 is like that, so have to wait a little while to let it settle down than continue.)

Enjoy pumping. remember don't PUT your FACE to the tank!

ALSO Switch off Engine when Pumping petrol (this is actually in the LAW) :becky:

1 more thing, Don't use Hp near the pump. You don't want yourself to be the UNLUCKY one.

A few things that I do for pumping gas;

1. I always want attendant to pump, but I will still DIY if no attendant around.

2. I always go to the same 2 petrol kiosks. The attendants know me.

3. I always stand around to watch, especially during the insertion and taking out of pump nozzle. The pump nozzle may scratch the car if it's moved too close to the car, especially if your car is close to the pump.

4. I never go to the pump on the left side. I do not want the pump hose to go over the bonnet.

5. I lock the car if I move away from car.

I think to be sure the "attendant" knows Mercedes-Benz well, I should change to ESSO instead of using Shell :becky:
