call to all camera gurus/enthusiasts,

Looking to move on from my compact digital camera to a more advanced camera, i.e DSLR or advanced DSLR-like compact. Want to get DSLR for its quality, but want to be able to carry it around.

Any recommendations or advice? I am looking at:

1) Nikon D3000

2) Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1

3) Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35/38

4) Canon Powershot S90

5) Canon Powershot G11

Thanks for all input! TIA

Since you're looking at the GF-1, consider the E-P1/E-P2 includes the pancake wide angle lens and 14-42mm kit lens (equivalent 28-84mm based on sensor size for 4/3 system).

thanks bro 9339, I have narrowed down on the G11 and the GF 1. was looking at the LX3, but being an 2008 model, read online that the LX4(LX5) releasing 2010.

Bro g8crasher, the PEN series has 3 models, which would you recommend? Sorry for the noob questions, the pancake lens and the 14-42mm kit lens are optional accessories or part of the inital package?

Any good to recommend for getting the respective cameras? First time buying these type of cameras.

The GF1's 20mm pancake lens is a quicker than the Olympus E-P1 17mm offering. I personally prefer the feel of the Olympus body (nice silver with leather trim) as opposed to the black utilitarian looking GF1.

Performance wise they are roughly about the same. Most reviews claim that the Olympus focus time is slower but if you're not a sports photographer I don't see what the problem is. The Olympus does yield a nicer overall feel in the resulting image (IQ processing slightly better than GF1).

GF1 has a built in flash, E-P1 does not.

The last I checked, the E-P1 can be purchased with the 2 lenses for $1,5XX @ Cathay Photo.

From a personal point of view, I would still lug a DSLR around to capture memories. You can't beat the quality especially if you need would like to print large portraits.

Was at Best Denki yesterday checking out prices. EP2 with 14-45mm lens is about 1.7k and GF1 with both lenses is same price. EPL1 is 1k with basic setup.

Mirco 4/3 lenses is new technology, but are they really worth the money/value of a entry level DSLR? i.e D3000

Any high end digital compact cameras, such as the LX 3 to recommend?

Thanks bros for the help and advise.

I have both the LX-3 and D-Lux 4. Both are essentially the same hardware wise, just differing IQ processing in JPEG. If you shoot RAW, both sama sama.

Compact, fast f2.0 lens@24mm range. They've been great for trips due to compact size. If you upload mostly to facebook or have no need for large prints and just need something convenient and compact, no point in investing your $$$ into a DSLR / micro 4/3 system.

But if you're thinking long term ownership and you're thinking of taking up photography seriously, consider a good DSLR system (Canon or Nikon).

Comparing the size of a micro 4/3s camera with lens attached vs DSLR, the DSLR is maybe 25% larger but it is well supported and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to purchasing lenses. A camera body is only as good as the best lens you can fit on it.

A combination of both which provides the tool + trained eye are vital to produce that something special.

Do consider how the camera feels in your hand ie, ergonomics, tactile shutter button, well designed user menu etc.

Always try to go midrange and upwards when you purchase a DSLR. The resale value will be fairly consistent for good cameras. If you don't mind purchasing a used one, Clubsnap is a good place to shop around. The last cam I bought off Clubsnap used (Canon 5D), I used it for a year and sold it off without losing $$$.

I just bought the Canon G11 a few months ago, the reason for getting this;

1. I am not going seriously into photography

2. I am not going to print large photos

3. I do not want to carry a big, heavy camera such as DSLR

4. I want more control over a compact

5. I don't want to spend more than one thousand on a camera

6. I always take couple shots so a flip screen is useful. Try holding a DSLR with one hand and shooting yourself, I am not so strong.

Thanks for the advise bro g8crasher, you helped me made up my mind on the DSLR vs Mirco4/3 vs advanced digital. I don't think I'm serious enough for photography to invest into DLSRs.

Bro Cklasse, all the 6 points you listed are found on mine! thanks!

but now, should my choices came down to LX3, G11 or S90. gotta read up more on these. anymore advises from bros and sis here?

I was looking at the S90 and G11 too, not sure about the LX3 and I am always a fan of Canon.

S90 looks beautiful in a compact case but the controls are too close and can get touched accidentally in most reviews. I settled for the G11 partly due to the flip screen (I don't want to carry those standing tripod) and the functions are the same as the S90. G11 has a slightly bigger sensor and the bigger camera size is still manageable.
