my car's ac has the dreaded urine smell the first couple of mins it is turned on. c&c has a $388 ac cleaning service which they say will clear up the smell... for folks who have tried it, is it as good as advertised? will the smell come back in say a few months?

according to the service consultant, it is "meant" to be there when i ask him, because of undry filter.. what RUBBISH..

anyway, i learned to out smell the odor for the 1st 3mins and it will go away... (my car is less than 4 months old)

Yes C&C will tell you a whole lot of rubbish to avoid fixing your car. Like oh it's supposed to veer off to the left and we can't do anything about it. NONSENSE PLEASE. Just turn up the heater to max and leave the car running for 10 mins, it should kill the smell.

i googled and apparently the smelly culprit is the bacteria growing on moist ac evaporator. a common solution is to apply a coat of chemical on the evaporator to kill off the organisms. i suppose that's what c&c will do but $388 seems expensive even taking into account the labor cost. otoh, i hate the idea of breathing in toxic air or having to run the ac on high every few months. if paying c&c's means the problem will be fixed permanently, i may consider it. hence the earlier questions...

my concern is, drying out the evaporator will inhibit bacteria growth for a while... but then they will come back again and in the meantime air quality within the cabin will suffer.

actually hor, why should we pay $388 to solve a problem that originates from C&C cars ah? ::)

my car has had the issue for a long time (and it is less than 6months old).

Tried Sareve's suggestion and let it run for 30mins - still no improvement.

Sent the car to Pandan for a check and they did the A/C cleaning. Smell was back in less than 4 days!

So, sent it back again specifically for the aircon smell. This time they (1) changed the A/C filter (2) did the aircon cleaning, and (3) modified the A/C controller so that when certain conditions are met - the blower will run for 30mins to dry out the system whilst the engine is not running (not sure if this will result in early battery replacement)

I have had it back for 10 days and been driving it everyday - and so far no trace of the smell.

thanks for sharing... the a/c cleaning, is that the $388 package or did you get it as part of your warranty? the c&c guy assured me that the $388 a/c cleaning will take away the smell for good.

The chaps at Pandan were good about the problem and extended the cleaning service as warranty.

Just crossing my fingers and hoping that the smell does not return.

And for information, my A/C system is permanently on AUTO at 20 or 22 deg C.

thought i'd provide an update on this. i found out about a 2-in-1 aircon cleaning service by Comfort Automotive Services. 2-in-1 refers to using compressed air to clean debris and a chemical wash (anti-bacteria) for the evaporator/cooling coil. At $68 (excl. GST) I thought it is a steal. The smell has gone away for now and I hope it won't be back for a while. They have a 3-in-1 package at $108 which includes changing your ac filter. Mine is clean so changing the filter is not needed.
