Lai lai lets see who using what tyre brand is all time favourite.

Brand Nick Model Size (inches) Reason for selection

Good Bad

1) Goodyear Blackmercs Eagle F1 Asymmetric R18 wet/dry/cheap Noisy

2) Dunlop

3) Falken

4) Toyo

5) Kumho

6) Michelin

7) Yokohama

8) Nankang

9) BridgeStone Willy Potenza RE050 (RFT) R17

GOOD: Fantastic tires that came complentary with my ride. the way it holds all the way is great, in dry or wet.

BAD: Wears out quite fast, in less than 2 years at 60,000 gone liao, but i do drive moderately hard.

BridgeStone Willy Potenza RE001 Adrenalin R17

GOOD: makes a continential car with hard suspension feel like a toyota corolla. very bouncy.

BAD: Worst freakin' tire i ever used. Caused my car to lose control on a dry night during hard bend and nearly sent my friends and me into a series of lamp posts.

BridgeStone Willy Turanza R16

GOOD: One of the best tires ive used so far. Tired hard to initiate a drift in heavy rain on a road full of water built up, but held it all the way, i was pushing really hard yet it didnt give.

BAD: expensive

Hi Willy,

interesting to read about your RE001 experience ... i have heard good stuff about them from friends who are on them ....

yes, many of my friends tell me good remarks about them too. thats why im so puzzled.

i would say i was going a tad fast that night of the incident, abt 100kmph my passengers recalled immediately.

100kmph to take a rather sharp bend and the car "lost" control. mind u, i have taken that car up to over 130kmph on bends that are nearly as similar with the RE050s and i dun even "feel" the grip going.

the weird thing was, the grip was just "lost", it wasn't gradual, like sometimes u can hear the "eeee, eeee" sound, and thats when u know you're at the limit, but this was just -> turn wheel, car turn, car slide out liao. if not for that event, it would have been (to quote jeremy clarkson) "no drama at all".

am i on a pair of inferior ones? ???

Hey all, thanks for all the suggestions!

In the end, I bought the CSC3 like what some bros here suggested.

I wanted to get a cheaper model, that is GoodYear Respect or something. Strong on comfort, avg for everything else. Could've saved me at least 350+ odd but the distributor is out of stock for one of the sizes.

Seeing how bald the tyres were, I decided to pay for the CSC3. Paid 1250 big ones for them (I think 225/50r17, 245/45r17). Doesn't sound that much more expensive than other places I have visited but the service at Hurry Trye (Serene Centre) is really good!

As part of the package, they are giving me Nitrogen fill up+free Nitrogen top ups+repairs to kerbed rims+rim wash+balancing! What more can i ask for? The even better news is that my service rep at cycle know about this and he say it was a-ok. He even asked me to drop in for a free wheel alignment, just to be on the safe side!

Good day I guess. =)

Am using these for my current ride - 18 or 19" (I can't remember) cos it came with the SUV...

No complaints after 2 years and 27000km later and they are still going strong i.e. nowhere near botak :clap:

Did you allow the tyres to break in properly ? You are advised to allow for at least 800-1000kms before they properly break in. It's good to get your tyres warmed up properly before hitting the crazy corners. :)

As always, check to ensure optimum tyre pressures as well - under inflated tyres lead to poor handling and braking performance.

No tyre works optimally out of the box. :thumbsup:

ah. i didn't.

i asked the tire guy if i needed to run them in -> no need, unless you going tracking those kind, den just warm up like how the f1 guys do it by left right left right.

well, i learnt my lesson. got quite a lot of kms on those RE001s already, will be looking for some clean clear open ground to fully test them out.

yah, both tires and brake pads need to be 'bedded-in' ... well, me no spirited driver until provoked la ... kekeke ...

ok just did another test on DRY malaysian road early this morning.

i'll say that the tires are still bad, can't even match the slightest standard of the $100 more RE050s.

doing minor/damn small/ not even considered a bend at ~100km, turn in slightly-sharply, lost grip and rear skidded out, nearly causeing a 3ser following close behind to kiss ass. wth man. those tires have easily more than 3000kms on them already and this is the result im getting?

tried Toyo, F1, RE001....all hav good grip where RE001 is the most quiet. most of my kakis like RE001, tried turning bend @120km/h, good grip. maybe you should chec with ur tyres supplier. :punk1:

Surely there are better tyres than RE001 but at a higher cost... but am not tyres specialist so cant comment. Only my humble opinion :iconsalut: Willy must have tested ur E60 to its limit... :thumbsup:

i think the RE050s are worth $1-2 extra per day for "peace of mind" for the next 2 years. i place a great deal of trust in my run flats during their service, even to a point of joking to my friend to see how many spike strips we could get through if we just "ran" through the causeway...

E60 gone to hell and back and in hell now... tortured every week, but she's lovin' it!

4 of my friends:

-> 325 cab

-> GS300

-> Cayman

-> Civic 2.0

all have good reviews for both wet and dry

hmmm. thats very interesting to know. got a good range of cars. haiz... what sort of tires am i on? its making me lose my confidence each corner i take...

Willy, I have changed to 19inch Eagle F1 (German ones) for my 5 a few months back, staggered setup. So far they're serving me well, but I'm the uncle type of driver as you know. Maybe you can check them out as well, pretty good value for money IMHO.

okie, will note them, but im now very inclined to change back to run flats, the stiffer sidewalls were apparently calculated by bmw when they made RFTs standard on this current batch of E60s. with non-RFTs my precious german babe has become more like a japanese saloon when i swivel the steering wheel to make a swift lane change. (no offence to any jap cars out here)

when i first bought this set of 4 rubber BANds, in less than 24 hours i wanted to swap them back for my lovely RE050s. but now more than 2 mths on them, i think i'll sit it out for the next 2 years trying to improve my skill on how to handle a very tail happy ride. anyways theres always the drift pit down south if i need to wear them out quickly. (think mercy, yinfung, sharman and jun - amongst others who have seen us perform) :)

The stock RFTs are super hard, and maybe your bump gets too used to it lio! After I've changed to 19s, I didn't feel any change in comfort at all, and that shows how hard the RFTs are! Wil, time to change to 19s or even 20s!!!

MTL!

  • 2 weeks later...

ok an update on the tires.

taked to a subaru owner abt his set of re001s.

willy - "...many of my friends mentioned this are a good set, good grip in the rain"

jason - "good grip??? perhaps only better than slicks..."

he commented that during rain he had trouble controlling his 4 wheel drive car during wet weather over puddles as it kept skidding, and he isn't known to drive very fast, comparing to my standards.

so it seems, im not the only person experiencing such poor results from this set. we have to conclude that standards of "good grip during wet weather" differs. im not trying to insult anybody over here, but inform people out there of my personal experience with this set of tires.

as always, happy smoking! (de rubber on ur tires!) (:
