iPhone as a movie projector - It’s Possible!

It is true that since the advent of iPhone, even the impossible seems to have become possible. Have you ever imagined going out on an adventure trip and spend the evening leisurely watching a movie? Well, you’d say “What big deal?” But, if I say that you can watch a movie, even if you have forgotten your laptop back home….. Did I hear you say “Impossible”?

Well, it’s possible now with the fifth-generation iPhone. And remember, we are discussing future technology here. All you need to do is power it up, find a suitable screen-like or wall and project the film there courtesy a new microdisplay technology for the iPhone known as FLCOS.

What is FLCOS

FLCOS, a microdisplay technology innovation from Displaytech (a recently acquired division of Boise-based Micron) is basically the technology that makes projection possible even from a relatively small form factor device. The technology behind Fast Liquid Crystal On Silicon (FLCOS) provides high image quality and vibrant colors; and all that is possible on your iPhone. You can not only enjoy the latest Hollywood flick, but also project a complex PowerPoint presentation sans your laptop.

The technology FLCOS as such is still in its prototype stage; however, Micron was quick to attract eyeballs by setting out a few demonstration to the world to inform the world as to what is in the offing for them around the Christmas of 2010 or early 2011. Presently, the demonstrations are given from the iPhone device with a tiny 3M projection engine - showing clips from ESPN and YouTube movies.

Reviews and Expectations

Anyone who has seen this little wonder of projection technology has gone gaga about its pretty cool features – the compact volume as much as a deck of cards, the high resolution image quality that made even text-based slides fairly good even in a very brightly lighted room.

It is expected that this promising technological innovation in the form of thumbnail-size chip behind the microdisplay will soon be embedded in iPhones by late 2010 or early 2011. Analysts believe this will usher a new revolution, considering the role FLCOS will play in the world of entertainment and its ready accessibility via the iPhone.

The best part of this technology is that, you can now use your iPhone to entertain a room full of people and that too without much fuss of assembling too many types of equipment. This also ensures that you can watch a movie or show a presentation anywhere and anytime without much fuss.

The technology – How FLCOS does it

Well, if you are interested in knowing about the technology that works behind FLCOS, it is the FLCOS microdisplays that can mix color eventually, by blending reds, greens, and blues in very quick sequence. Micron's director of marketing services, Eric Boles explains that this is done in conjunction to the human eye that turns such color mixing into full color. It means FLCOS averts from color filtering of any kind.

Eric Boles also reveals that the projection engine though of only about an inch-and-a-half in length, is highly power efficient – producing 10 lumens in just 1.1 watts. Now, isn’t that incredible?

The reason, why Micron has not yet supplied the chip to any smartphone makers is because at the moment the chips will prove to be quite expensive. Therefore, they are seeking some time to develop their innovation further so that they can provide iPhone users with smaller, faster and cheaper chips soon.
