Halo army boy.....How's life in tekong?

its terrible sir! but nearly all the guys here have gone thru it, so nothing new i guess... my sargents are great, so are my plat comm... but my 2 i/c and csm are real bXXXXXXs! confinements are free over there, each platoon takes its turn to stay back on weekends... RT is also free... sometimes i wonder why i didnt become an australian...

but at the end of the day, yes, i do have my fair share of laughs, as i told some bros and sis here.. and its really the friends that help u go through it...

NS is for everyone.. NS is a crime...

I always look at it this way. You should be lucky that you are paid to shoot rifle and may be big guns, sleep in cemetry (maybe)....not many ordinary people get to do this, Malaysian, Aussies, Americans....come to think about it, I miss reservist leh.

well NS might seem sucky having to book in on sunday night while ur frenz are still out there having fun, it can get physically and mentally draining but i guess its these rough times that would help push you to become someone better.. like a diamond being polished eh.. the best part i guess would be that there are others to go through it with u and if they can do it why not u.. it might suck being a Rec or even at any sch for that matter cuz training is tough but it all would be over soon than u know it and wads more.. u guys can always talk abt all the things that you have gone through when u all meet up with ANY singaporean that has gone through NS too.. common topic already.. i guess NS like many other things is how to view it.. for me i had great experiences through my NS life even though it got though.. met a few great frenz too who went through what i went through and we still keep in contact... anyway although the pay aint much but at least its smth.. nth much to worry abt during tt 2yrs and they even keep u fit.. u wouldnt have to pay so much to external gyms.. haha.. of cuz u cant expect to loose an unbelievable amt or weight or become Mr. Macho within that period just through NS alone.. it could help am sure.. the rest would also be on our part... well.. anyway as they say.. if we dont defend wad's ours.. who will???

You seem to misunderstand. While the army does prioritise fitness, especially for recruits, the purpose of BMT is to equip you with the basic skills required to defend your country in times of war. What this means is that you need to know how to take orders, have basic proficiency with a few weapons and work as a team. Just like there are bosses and workers in society, similarly, the army has an extremely hierachical structure. Not everyone can be a sergeant or an officer. Perhaps you might aspire to be an officer, but ask yourself, why would the army select you over someone who's fitter and stronger, it's basic meritocracy at work.

You speak like the army owes you something, but unfortunately, it really doesn't owe you anything at all. Its purpose is to create a organisation capable of defending our country, and it needs drivers and clerks just as much as it needs foot soldiers and officers. It's not there to help you get fit, if you want to be fit, do it yourself, especially if you become a clerk and have tons of free time after work.

This may all sound very harsh and critical, but I felt exactly the same way as you do now when I was in the army. However, I have grown to love my country after living in another country and discovering how much better our country is to theirs. I'm proud to be Singaporean and I encourage you to think of serving in the army as something you can do to give back to your country. It's not about our government or anything like that, think of it as rendering a service to your home.

Think positive man, train hard and stay out of trouble. This is a once in a life time experience, and you will become a better person at the end of it.

after my 1/2 year term, i will most likely end up as a lorry driver, a computer nerd, or doing some dead end job in a store. at 120kgs, i will probably not even see the battlefield, let alone go out and personally fight the enemy. i'm asking myself, why waste my time heading down a dead end road.

Just like there are bosses and workers in society, similarly, the army has an extremely hierachical structure. Not everyone can be a sergeant or an officer. Perhaps you might aspire to be an officer, but ask yourself, why would the army select you over someone who's fitter and stronger, it's basic meritocracy at work.

you have a fair point, and in the outside world, if your boss is an ass, what would a normal person do? leave the problem, change the job. its so clear in the outside world, why shouldn't it be clear where I am too?

one of my points are, why not give us a chance at living our dreams, other units have so much chances of fulfilling their dreams of taking a leadership role, am i to believe that they are categorizing us as an unfit batch that will serve as men for the next 2 years not counting reservist?

You speak like the army owes you something, but unfortunately, it really doesn't owe you anything at all. It's not there to help you get fit, if you want to be fit, do it yourself, especially if you become a clerk and have tons of free time after work.

my point is why waste time, resources, energy and manpower training people for a life that only 2 out of 160 will see? am i to believe that even if 1 person can pick up a gun and fight, there will still be hope?

instead of wasting precious $ on people like me, give it back to the people, after all, their tax is what puts helmets on ur heads and boots on ur legs.

This may all sound very harsh and critical, but I felt exactly the same way as you do now when I was in the army. during hardships, everyone feels their worst, thats probably why i am posting such negative views about the subject. after the hardship is over, one will look back and said they enjoyed the experience.

i am not ashamed of the country i come from, i don't blame the system, there may be and are probably worse ones out there.

I base my experience solely on what i'm going thru, so that i don't regret yesterday and live for today. i see this world as a give and take situation, note that it is different from an apple for an apple, an eye for an eye. I am very willing to give my 200% worth of strength, energy and devotion to what i believe in, what i am willing to die for. however i fail to see any progress except the lost of 30kgs during my next 2 or so years.

i believe in my personal motto, ONE life, EXCEED it! so badly, that i am willing to go out my way to see that i am living it. yes u say that i dun see the big picture, but den again, i was never really given a chance to see it from the perspective of having 2 bars on my clothes. so i guess, i have to find my own way to see the big picture.

i make my own destiny, and glady, this is how i will choose to live it.

One morning, Wake it.

One call, Make it.

One love, Profess it.

One meal, Eat it.

One drink, Down it.

One car, Drive it.

One corner, Drift it.

One race, Win it.

One day, Live it.

ONE LIFE, EXCEED IT!

Haha Willy, there are people in worse situations than you! I was in mono-intake, basically there was 0% chance of anyone becoming a spec or an officer simply because we lacked the educational qualifications. At least you stand a chance, however low it might be, to become a commander. Oh well, I don't know why it bothers you though, I always wanted to be a stay out clerk :P

sorry hor, my england bery cannot make it, so pls bear with me ;D

willy, the system now is much much better than during my times, welfare & allowances or others. anyway i am not from SAF but from SPF, but during my time not much differences. even if you become driver or clerk, it is still a very important vocations. if no clerk, who is going to help handle the admin & pay wise thingy?. if no driver, than when are all your rations, foods, ammos & other stuffs going to reach you, use manpower carry on foot ah?

one of the reasons why mos likely you will not be selected for specs or ocs is quite obvious, fitness level & obese status. well, in fact we have ourselves to blame, coz we did not get our ready for it or simply can't be bothered to get fit before enlist. but why i say 'WE"?? coz i am a very obese person when i was enlist too, imagine there was no pes BP, either Pes A, B or C & i kana Pes B :twinmfinger: & when you train with those fit ppl, really there is only one word in my mind, "I may as well go die sua", it is very hard or impossible to keep up with them & there were those ppl who felt I am a burden even called me "err, you know you are damn useless, just like rubbish" I believed you won't be call that right? but I still over come all that. just remembered, not everyone are born to be hero, as long you have done your best, that is more than enough to give yourself a pat your shoulder.

Who else let you drive a 5 tonner truck around? the Army. Look at it this way, you get to drive except it used to be a Mercedes-Benz, 911 some more but not now la.

Whatever happens, we human always like to find something or someone to blame but not ourselves.

So, if you have lost weight after BMT, putting back the weight is not SAF fault. It's your own doing to not stay fit and continue to eat properly and exercise, so you really cannot blame SAF for putting you as a driver or clerk.

In real working world, I have guys blaming me for not being a good boss but at the end of the day, it is the individual who does not want to perform. It's easy to blame the boss or the company but not yourself.

i think most of you fail to see my point here.

i have nothing against clerks, drivers or storemen.

The point i'm trying to get across is -> don't go one big round. just shoot straight to the point.

why waste time and effort training ppl like me, when we will only get posted to this dead end job? SEND US THERE NOW so that we can learn quickly and be of full use to the army. instead of training us for a vocation we will never see.

hope this clears things up.

You need to learn all this stuff in BMT because even clerks and drivers will be called upon to fight in the event that enough of our riflemen die in times of war.

I think you have seriously underestimated the importance of your job.

Every man (and woman) is SAF is important and all of them has a role to play.

Why are there S3, S2, S1, S4 (departments)? They each handle an aspect of war that as a whole work together to complete our objectives.

See what happens if the clerk/storeman/driver goes on MC in any coy. Sure it does not create any havoc during peace time but see the point-of-failure it can create during wartime. Missing ops orders, undelivered ammunition, unmovable tanks.

I just feel that you should do your best and be a respected soldier in your coy. Respect is >>> rank.
