He dashes through KPE tunnel at over 100km/h

20090526.144822_kpe.jpg

A driver films himself speeding at 100km/h in the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel and posts the footage online, flaunting his misdeed.

The video, titled "100kmh in Singapore KPE, end to end in 6 minutes" was posted last Thursday on video-sharing website Youtube. As suggested by the title, it is about six minutes long, and also shows the driver avoiding the speed cameras inside the tunnel, reported Lianhe Wanbao.

The footage showed that upon entering the KPE tunnel, the car speed hovered mainly between 94km/h and 110km/h - and once hit 113km/h. The driver also weaved among the traffic, switching from lane 1 to lane 3 to avoid slower vehicles.

On three occasions, he slows down to the tunnel speed limit of 70km/h to clear the speed cameras.

Only the driver's left hand is on the steering wheel throughout the jerky footage, which suggests he used his right hand to hold the camera to film the incident.

Motorists are advised to strictly adhere to the prescribed road speed limit of 70km/h. Offenders found exceeding the speed limits will be given demerit points ranging from four to 24 points.

It's a Porsche, some of the comments on the youtube vid claim it's a Cayman.

Not that I condone this sort of behavior or anything, but the speed limit in the KPE is really too damn SLOW!!! How can it be considered an expressway when the road outside my house in SG is just as wide and has the same speed limit.

I think the government should really consider raising the speed limits on our roads. Since we have laws in place to essentially force people to switch to new cars after the 10/15 year mark, almost all the cars on our roads are pretty modern and capable of safely driving at higher speeds.

Like ehwwong, I just set my cruise control to 70km inside the tunnel.

agreed totally. was travelling on it a couple of weeks ago with a reasonable amount of traffic! all were crammed on the left lane going at 70kmph!!! i find it totally retarded that even smaller lorries can travel at that speed! nobody wanted to overtake on the right...

using CTE tunnels as an example, i think travelling at 90kmph is reasonable, considering the length of the KPE + the fact that they have the electronic speed display... adjusting it to suit the amount of traffic inside is great.

right now, the kpe is one of the worst places to drive in singapore, and i would avoid it if i was in a rush.

I've seen those vids, but it's not like those accidents can't happen at 70km/h. The greatest problem with tunnels, according to some of these examples after checking out wikipedia, is lack of proper ventilation and escape routes. As long as our tunnels are well constructed, higher speed limits should be fine. It's not like these accidents can't happen on any normal road.

Which is exactly why in an enclosed area with virtually no route for escape the speed limit should be set lower.

As you already know, the impact at which one crashes at 70km/h versus 110km/h will have varying consequences.

Consider the reaction time, impact of crash, time to stop the vehicle plus factor in good brakes, tyres etc and you'll see why it's a recipe for disaster.

Don't usually smoke in my car when I'm driving but I find it a must to smoke whenever I travel along the KPE!

Don't mind the speed limit on the KPE that much as that is when I can usually have a relaxed drive since I don't have to worry abt other cars suddenly cutting into my lane.

Basically, like previously posted, if ur in a rush, then avoid this place lor. Otherwise, light up and smoke ur lungs out!
