245 means broader tires than 225

45 or 40 is the profile of the tires or the "depth" 40 means less depth bet. rims & circumference of tire.

R17 mean 17" rims.

Pros:- Having 245/40/R17 means having broader & lower profile tires behind - supposedly to give better road holding.

Cons:- The broader the tires i,e 245 and the lower profile i.e 40 means U pay more for the tires and the other thing is that U cannot rotate front/back tires.

If you don't mind not having a staggered fitment, it should be okay on a W203. I don't think they will stick out too much at the front. The difference in ET is 3mm.

From the serial number, I suspect these were originally made to fit the AMG R170 SLK. The C32 AMG W203 were fitted with these as well though they were staggered as listed below.
