DLS & Genesis The Facts - Background Information For ICE Enthusiasts

Recommended Posts

DLS and Genesis, the facts.

Much speculation has surrounded the similar appearance of some DLS and Genesis products. The following information is fact, not speculation or rumour, and is presented as a timeline of events with some background to the former relationship between the companies.

Genesis was formed in 1991 and began selling amplifiers in the UK in that year. In 1993 we were approached by a Swedish company DLS Svenska AB to distribute Genesis amplifiers in Sweden. As time went by DLS requested distribution of Genesis amplifiers in other markets alongside their speakers, and this was implemented successfully.

The Series 1 & Series 2 amplifiers were dual branded as DLS Genesis for export to give both brands recognition in the marketplace.

In 1997 Series 3 was released and this was branded purely as Genesis, as the dual branding had created confusion in many markets.

At CES 2001 DLS showed a line of amplifiers VISUALLY similar to the Genesis Series 3. In February 2001 Genesis dismissed DLS as their international distributor and the two companies went their separate ways.

All Genesis amplifiers are designed in England by the founder Gordon Taylor, and are hand built at our factory in Southend, England. Our website has scans of three factory visits and interviews by magazines over the past 10 years to document this and a fourth is on the way though it will be in French.

Most of our distributors and UK dealers have visited the factory as have a number of customers collecting repaired or refurbished amplifiers. The ‘Made in England’ statement on the badge is totally factual. Anyone who is in doubt of this is welcome to visit the factory to confirm it’s accuracy.

The DLS A series amplifiers are designed and built in the Far East from specifications laid out by DLS. Early versions had the names of the Chinese designers on the top copper print, however this was removed in subsequent versions.

The external similarity is all that is in common between these amplifiers and the Series 3 from Genesis. Internally they have nothing in common, as removing the bottom covers will reveal.

The A series amplifiers are also marketed by Phass, a Japanese brand.

It isn’t the first time we’ve been copied, Poweramper made a particularly nasty knockoff of our Series 2 amplifiers in the mid ‘90’s. I expect it will probably happen again as it’s easier to duplicate than create.

We also aren’t the first company DLS has copied, that award goes to Morel. In both cases they have copied the look but are yet to achieve the performance of the original.

Chiat lat lah!

Vibration noise or "aeroplane" whining noise?

Your installer CS should be able to fix that w/o problem lah!

BTW I also downgraded my subs.

Just sold my pair of >15 years old a/d/s Ltd Ed. 310px subs back to a buyer in the States for USD$1,700 and he paid FedEx shipping. ;D

He probably googled the net and found that I had these pair of subs.

I could resist the so good F$#kin offer. :D

Now I am going to instal my raincheck last pc. of IDMax.

With the previous pair of 10", Superman track on IASCA test disc got "grounded"

Now with the IDMax, Superman will be going places....wahahhahah! ;D

Hello Mekanic,

My IDMax is up & going & now Superman drop his G-String playing track 5 on IASCA disc :)

IASCA will be having a SQ Competition soon for amateurs.

That mean installers & those who has taken part in Pro Class before may not be able to join the competition.

There will be 3 rounds of heats with 5 top qualifiers from each of these 3 rounds to join the finals.

The 1st round will be on 22nd June '08 but the joining fee is a whopping $350 per car.

My installer wants me to join the competition.

I will be in the <600 WRMS class.

Hope to see you in the competition this time!

Chow!

The usual is that they give out trophies and the installer gets to keep it after the winner take photographs with their winning trophies.....wahahahhaha!

The last time I won 1st prize in a KL ICE competition, my installer get to keep the trophy and the orkui niser "gave" me RM5K worth of JVC ICE. KNN! I can't even sell them for $600 for them. You say lah!....wahhahha! :)

It's my installer wish to put my car in the competition.

The rest of the competitors are not easy meat and lots of them are using the latest Alpine F1 ICE or Pioneer ODR (Optical Digital Reference) system which run into 10 of S$K. My ICE system is > 10 years old - how to beat new & high tech??? So I don't expect much....hehehehe! :)

Uncle KP, eh sibei paikong leh... as the saying goes "They don't make them like they used to"... hahahahaha... maybe I haven't heard enough ODR based systems but I find some of them quite clinical - almost too perfect! Certain old school equipment still have that magical touch and your XES is definitely a special one

:offtopic: With regards to clinical sounding systems, there is nothing like putting on a good jazz vinyl! I find it very comforting listening to the hiss, pops and crackles.

Hi David,

After I sold my subs recently, I got Sam to put in my last piece (I bought total 8 - sold 7 pcs.) of IDMax Ver. 3 subwoofer.

After the initial tuning, he wanted my car to be in the coming competition.

It's on the 22nd June, place I dunno yet cos probably I am not around and Sam will send a proxy to bring my car for the competition.

Week after next I will send my car to Sam for further tuning.

XES old school ICE is still CDs and not vinyls. :banghead:

I've laid off home audio for > 10 years after I brought them back from Batam.

I only switched on my equip'mt every few months to warm them up nia cos sell them fetch no money.

In the early days, I played with CDs nia and recently dunno why some kind of "bug hit me" suddenly & made me to turn on my home audio again. :)

A few weeks ago, I bought a cheap used turn table, added a phono pre-amp and in < 2 mths. I bought a few hundred 12"s & 45s.......bring me back to my young days when I played my father's vinyls on his radiogram. :D :D :D

Tomorrow, I'll be going to buy a vinyl cleaning machine....hehehehe! :la: :la:
