sillywilly’s guide to Convoy-ed Driving

Rule 1 – The Golden Rule

In a convoy, you ALWAYS WORK AS A TEAM.

Respect each other. You all are friends, while in convoy, pay more attention to each other’s driving style, you never know when you have to brake hard or steer hard to avoid a potential disaster.

Rule 2 – OBEY the Convoy Leader (CL).

You TRUST him with your life (and your passengers’), give him the SAME TRUST.

Do not act zai, get emotional or egoistic and try to overrule him. All discrepancies can be taken up AFTER the drive is over.

Rule 3 – No Egoistic Driving ALLOWED at ALL TIMES.

Even if there is an Alien Vehicle (AV) (i.e. not part of the convoy) playing with you, jam brake, etc.. Do not let him get the better of you while in convoy, it is not only your life in your hands, all the vehicles around you and behind you will SUFFER the consequences of YOUR INCONSIDERATE ACTIONS.

Rule 4 – Forgive and forget.

Even if someone accidentally high-beams you, horns at you, especially if they are not part of the convoy, live and let live. Com’on stud, you’re in a group, what is he gonna do? Run you off the road? The convoy leader / sweeper will signal to let him pass.

Rule 5 – Keep Walkie Talkie chatter to a minimum.

Yes, it’s fun to sing a group song or let your friends “tune in” to your next Need for Speed Soundtrack. But NO FUN if you all miss the Convoy Leader’s warning about a speed camera that ends up with you having to pay a fine + accumulate demerit points. Worst, an EMERGENCY BROADCAST about a accident ahead or a convoy member running into engine trouble at the back end of the convoy.

General Guidelines

a) have walkie talkie handy – a must for SGMERC driving events.

B)first aid kit – yes most cars come with it in the boot now a days, but what happens if your supplies are over the use-by date?

c) if you are unable to perform the particular convoy maneuver, please inform the affected parties of your dilemma.

d) the convoy should not road hog, no matter how fast your convoy is driving, there may always be a faster convoy or another road user. Let them pass as the convoy sweeper may be irritated by an AV poking his ass.

e) CL should always look out for situations such as turns and filter lanes which can break open the convoy, no one likes be separated as getting back into formation may not always be easy. CL should wait for incoming vehicles to the designated lane to clear and then move out, followed by 2nd vehicle blocking the lane with hazard lights allowing entire convoy to pass before proceeding in complicated circumstances.

f) a good sense of team work and fellowship including concern for your brother and sister drivers in front and behind you.

Special Advice

go fast, go near.

2nd car keep very close to the CL.

When the CL high beams the ahead vehicle to move over, it may result in a disgruntled driver trying to take revenge by doing the same after the CL has passed. 2nd car keep the gap tight preventing the AV from moving back in.

*In many countries and states, speeding and/or wreckless driving is considered a serious offence.

**Local traffic rules apply above all Convoy Rules.

***Plans & Rules are subject to multiple changes and on the fly amendments due to various circumstances and road conditions.

****This is just my 2 cents worth on convoy driving and my humble contribution – that means please don’t shoot me. =)

Thanks to Emmanuel (Pooo) for helping me come up with this. Others, please help contribute to this article, your comments & critique are most welcome for the benefit of all.

my personal experience is that:

(a) the convoy can get 'stretched' over time and this can get very tricky to maintain .. cld be due to some cars driving too fast for the others and others simply too slow ...

(B) lane discipline is very important ... I have seen many cars within the convoy overtaking one another and leading to above and totally dis-organised ... like it or not, this is a convoy and not a race ...

© sweeper needs to be vigilant and lookout for slower cars and able to 'push' them to keep pace with the others

(d) some lead-car simply too fast for others to catch up ...

At the end of the day, impt to note the varying skills of the convoy drivers and to know when to push forward and when to slow down to maintain a reasonable convoy ...

But kudos for the pple who organised such drive ... never easy ...
