New dual-mode IU for cars available end-June

Posted: 24 March 2009 1958 hrs

SINGAPORE: The new, dual-mode In-vehicle Unit (IU) will be available for cars from end-June. But the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will make them available for new taxis and other vehicles from Wednesday.

The new IU is developed by the LTA and is designed to accept both NETS CashCards and the new CEPAS-compliant cards such as the new ez-link card.

Motorists with vehicles fitted with the dual-mode unit can use the new ez-link card to pay for Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) immediately.

However, this is only possible for parking payments after carparks are progressively upgraded from October. For now, motorists will have to use the NETS CashCards in the dual-mode unit for these parking payments.

LTA said that vehicle owners are not required to change their current IUs to the new ones. But those who wish to can do so at the LTA Authorised Inspection Centres at a cost of S$150. :la:

The new IU was first introduced for motorcycles in September last year. To date, about 8,000 motorcycles have been fitted with the new IU since it was introduced.
