You could save a life.

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters... S.T.R .

My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a party, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.. (they offered to call ambulance)

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospit al - (at 6:00pm , Ingrid passed away.)

She had suffered a stroke at the party . Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.

Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this....

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.

The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions :

S * Ask the individual to SMILE ..

T * = TALK. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (eg 'It is sunny out today').

R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS .

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call the ambulance and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE : Another 'sign' of a stroke is

1. Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue.

2. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

A prominent cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

….and it could be your own…..

PASS THIS ON….

I had 3 mild strokes which medically they call TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack)

1. 17 Sep 2004 about 3.00 pm - I was talking to a salesgirl - suddenly words couldn't comes out of my mouth. My wife was beside me and she thought I was joking. I felt limped on my left leg and nearly fall - I held on to my wife. My tongue was OK! Once awhile for the next 12 hours at times I have problem to pronounce some words. Admitted to SGH, CT Scan & Neck Scan OK - Discharged on 20th Sep '04

2. 30 Jan 2005 about 1.00 pm - taipow chicken rice at Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice at Smith Street - nearly missed a step in the shop - thouhgt nothing of it.

Send my car to ICE installer - waiting at road side for taxi - suddenly my left leg could not support me and I sat down on the road. Same again, over

the next 12 hours some words hard to pronounce. Admitted to SGH - Did the same scans found nothing - discharged after 2 nights

3. 5th Feb - 2005 - a week later - 10 am took a bus (car at ice installer) - after boarding the bus, my legs gave way - quickly sat down. Managed to get

down the bus half an hour later and took the MRT - came out of the MRT - legs gave way again. Took a taxi to see my GP cousin. Did an MRI at Mt. E,

found nothing. No pt going to the hospital. In the afternoon - after taking lunch, found my legs couldn't stand up. GP cousin sent wheelchair to pick me

up. In the evening - things became normal. 3 days later seen a cardiologist - did a thread mill, heart scan - all OK. His diagnosis -mild stroke due to

stress. (Probably correct - had lots of work problems at that time - 1000+ workers went on strike :death:)

I've to admit - all that while my cholesterol level was real bad - 2 mths before my 1st stroke, my GP cousin sent me for a "full medical tests". From the test results he told me I will be very likely to get a stroke very soon. True enough - I got 3 mild strokes. :death:

Some frens have died from strokes or heart attack, some are paralysed, some are limping but thanks god I m lucky till now.

1.5 years ago, during routine medical checks, they informed me I'm diabetic. :death:

I have given up my 2 to 3 packs of Indon cigarettes(stopped 4.5 years), I've positively changed my lifestyle over the last 1 1/2 years

and now my blood pressure is very normal, my cholesterol level is very normal and healthy. I dun have to take medication for my diabetes.

Probably I will die healthier....wakakakak :wifstupid:

Now I fully understand that all the money in this world is of no use if U don't have good health to enjoy it (unfortunately I dun have lots of money ;D)

Living A Healthy Lifestyle Is a Very Important Priority!!!!
