1 Year to Go - How, how?

Recommended Posts

W221 due for scrap in 2006. OMV $115k.

Car is in very good condition, spent over $20k to take care of it over the last 1 year.

If renew, means $~65k ARF lost + potentially $60-70k COE,

$125-135k for 10 years OR $95-100k if 5 years

Question:

1. If I were to dereg, what other cars can I look at?

2. Or just keep it?

Things i look for in a car (highest to lowest):

a. Space

b. Comfort

c. Luxury

d. Power (Torque)

Any thoughts?

Hi

Upon Dereg , with the $64K,  with some top up.  I feel that you can get probably a similar used ( 5-6 years old ) luxury car.

This path would be what I will probably take.

To keep it, I think the cost is too high in term of depreciation .

Thanks

my take is you can probably buy a good cond s class ( facelifted) and transfer some of the goodies to the newer car and scrap the old one.

at least by doing so you wont loose the PARF value which is quite a sum given the high OMV of the s class

also when you renew the coe, the roadtax goes up by 10 % per year.

alternatively, can look for another brand of make like Lexus LS or even a RX

I have a 06 Lexus RX300 as a second car now

pretty much fit your requirements above beside the power( torque)

I use this car more than my W212 E class these days

I think your choice will depend on how you view the car, its condition, and your financial situation.

The S-Class, if taken good care of, can easily last decades. The interior leather, and all parts used are top notch. If you treat car ownership as a hobby, then I think driving an "older" Merc in its original condition would be something you'll be proud of. S-Class always turn heads, regardless of age.

But just imagine the alternative… for $135K, with a bit of topup,  you can about get a 2010-2011 E300 E-Class. It will have lower operating cost and maintenance will also be cheaper. The flip side is that you may need to spend a bit of money to fix the wear-n-tear sooner than the S-class (which you just did).

Of the 2 above, I would probably choose to go with getting E-Class. Mainly because I feel S-Class maintenance and parts cost is too high for me. But if I can afford it, I'll retain the S-Class. Because the quality of 2006 S is still superior to 2011 E.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I feel the road tax increase is an non issue.

Over 3-4 years (year 10th to 14th), the additional charge is 'only' $3164 extra in total.

I could easily add that to the depreciation and the overall depreciation and the depreciation is still roughly the same as a E-Class.

To be honest though, I don't mind the E-Class. Just that the 2010-2013 versions are so boring. If the E-Class was designed like the C-Class W205, I would jump at it!

I wished I could just transfer the goodies to another S-Class W221 but I can't. Typical S350L is $100k OMV while mine is $115k OVM because it came with Panoramic Roof, Rear Massage Seats, Rear Seat Entertainment, Rear Picnic Tables, Harman Kardon Logic7 Sound System, all original factory options. Quite one of a kind, even S500L don't have these options.

Lexus is a good recommendation but isn't the depreciation roughly the same too? Maybe less maintenance cost?

Any other models to recommend? Space and comfort are top priorities.

i see liao i also left right...

dun change like high cost, but looking at the specs, confirm cannot find a similar 2nd unit.

if changed, then very straight forward too... new ride, and loses all of the above.

Again, thank you everyone for the input.

Last Question - Anyone has any views on the Jag XJ? By next year, it should be about $130k with 5 years to go. It seems like a good choice.

Itchy backside :)
