"Letter from Fan Chian Jen

Deputy Director, Motor Sports Department,Singapore Sports Council

WE REFER to "Where's our own track, for homegrown racers?" (Sept 17).

Since we announced the plan to develop a permanent racetrack in Changi in October last year,

we have received numerous queries and diverse feedback from many international and local players

about the project's specifications.

At present, we are studying how we can optimise its overall value proposition,

as well as how to enhance its commercial viability and sustainability for private investors.

The racetrack is scheduled to be completed between late 2010 and early 2011.

The Singapore Sports Council has also been working with the Singapore Motor Sports Association

and other Government agencies to grow interest in motor sports.

We hope to identify talent and develop talent through industrial and motor sports attachments,

as well as to develop local motoring events and bring in international ones.

We are also considering low-cost entry to the track,

in order to give access to the general public with the aim of driving up interest in motor sport."

some good news:

"According to Teo, the Government is exploring various ideas for the track and once these are completed, it will issue tender forms for the parties to submit. He said the Government is open to the idea of allowing for more land for the track, if it is viable. The original plan was for a 20-hectare site."

Dunno about SG, but I've people from other countries say that they had to buy separate insurance plans for track coverage because normal insurance will not cover tracking.

The proposed Changi racetrack is for all other racing except F1? Are they keeping the Marina bay street circuit for the F1 as it is only for 5 years?

if SUTL is a memebers only club, would that translate to greater costs for the casual trackkie (people who tracks for 1 or 2 times tops per year)? or even not everyone will be able to join and enjoy the track? ie if SUTL wins

whoever wins this tender... is doing so so that they can make money. Unfortunately, one can't make much from casual trackkies if they are going there just 1-2 times a year. People who want to track their fast and powerful cars almost invariably want a degree of exclusitivity... ie they dont mind paying a membership fee as well as a monthly subscription for exclusive use of the track. (although I dont think anyone will mind sharing the track with a C63 :devil2:)

Likewise, the new owner also needs to ensure his monthly cashflow is good, hence the monthly subs.

So unfortunately, me thinks costs may be slighly higher for casual trackkies (non members), which in my humble opinion sounds fair. After all, providing this kind of facilities and its maintainence cant be cheap... you wouldn't want the winner of the tender to go out of business after some time simply because no one's paying the bills.

In any case, this may be the plan for the other parties too, not just SUTL.

we'll just have to wait for the track to be tendered out - trust there are many issues to be sorted out still.

yea, i guess thats sounds fair altho its still early days

but then again, i think the future owners will have to some up with a good price plan, else the next race track is just a couple of hours away ;D

now i am a bit regretting for not taking up the LSD option......
