Help Please! ATF Flush.

Benny

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me out on a transmission problem I'm experiencing on my W204 (YOM'08), with mileage approaching 110k.

Recently I found that my auto transmission doesn't shift like it used to, taking longer than normal to upshift gears. I'm kinda worried about this and think its high time I do a thorough flush of the ATF.

Can anyone recommend a good workshop that does a decent job of flushing the ATF with the proper equipment (as opposed to the simply drain-and-fill workshops) which can also diagnose problems with the transmission as well? Am also considering see&see, but am worried of the high costs involved with ATF flush.

How much will a reputable workshop charge for an ATF flush for a pre-facelift (5-G aka 722.6 transmission) W204? Any recommended workshops will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all for your advice in advance  :)

I think it's worth enquiring about the job at C&C and Autospritze and here's why.

I agree with you that most workshops will simply do a drain and fill and that still leaves a good few litres unchanged in the torque converter. You will need to reset adaptations as well.

Thanks g8crasher.

Has anyone here done a flush with our site sponsor - MBM? Are they equipped to do proper ATF flush as well? As I stay near Redhill, thought it might be easier if I send my car there for the flush instead.

not sure if Redhill has a decent MB shop to handle this (less C&C of course).  MBM is def more than competent to handle this.  My experience with them is v positive.

So far from what I have called and asked, C&C charges $900+ (heart skipped a beat when I heard the price), whilst MBM charges about $500 for proper ATF flush (this is for 722.6, 5G tranny). Planning to call a couple more reputable workshops tmr (e.g. ChipSoon, AutoSpritze) and enquire before deciding where to change. Cheers.

Just curious.....since 2008 you didnt change the ATF before? Not even once? Mine is approaching 75K  and didnt change yet.

I bought pre-owned. According to the service records, the previous owner changed the ATF at 60k and didn't change thereafter again.

Anyways, finally did the ATF flush + adaptation reset at MBM due to their technical know-how and specialization in conti makes (partly also because it's near where I stay). Overall positive experience with MBM. Though slightly more expensive than what the other workshops quoted (still significantly cheaper than C&C), I think it's worth the $ as most importantly my car shifts perfect now.

Hi Benny,

What is adaptation reset?  I am new here.  Was told that there is no need to do atf flush, just drain oil.  In doing atf flush, the engine must run to flush out the atf from the torque converter, which will in itself harm the auto transmission.  Is this correct?   Thank you for any advise.

what's most important is you have a peace of mind when you send your precious ride in for something.... my PI ride does it's servicing there too.... Overall experience is good.... Like you said.. It's slightly more expensive than others... But I can live with that.... As long as its well taken care of....

Hi, is there a recommended interval that the ATF flush needs to be done? 60K? or wait and see?

Thanks

Basically, the reset means it wipes out the memory of the way the gearbox had adapted to your driving style. If you had been an aggressive driver, the shift point is usually higher than normal, or if you had been driving like an old grandma, the shift point is lower...like in fuel economy mode. Resetting the adaptor reverts the shift point to factory settings. IMO, I would prefer not to reset it as the car has to relearn your driving style.

You are right about the possible damage to the tranny by flushing. If its not properly done, the life span of the tranny is shortened prematurely. IMO, normal drain is better. To be assured that that the undrained ATF in the torque converter (about 1/3) is removed, it is recommended that you repeat the change of ATF after a few days of driving by draining it again. It looks like a waste of ATF, but that's what anal owners do if u really care for the car. Frankly, I think changing the ATF every 20k km should suffice....bearing in mind that turbo cars are really merciless with any oils due to the heat.

Thanks bro Jtang.  Your explanation is very clear.  Planning to drive up to Ipoh next week and want to change ATF before trip.  Last change, a year ago, using normal drain method.  Not so anal as to change every few days, but anal enough to change it 1 year on.   Thank you.
