Squealing brake sound when turning..

Gukkie

Recommended Posts

Hi, my C180 1.6l 7G is starting to develop issues..

I did a ceramic brake pad change at 5k mileage and there were no problems..

It is at 16k mileage now and has already gone for its first Service 3 weeks back..

Just last week, the front left brakes started to squeal when applied and as well as turning left at low speed. Very loud squeal..

When I turn left without applying the brakes at low speed, the same squealing noise occurs as when I apply my brakes..

Any ideas on what is happening? Could it be a bad CV joint or failing bearings? Brake pad thickness is still more than 50%..

Cheers!

Brough it down to CnC earlier today..Was told that it was a rotor issue on the rear left..Only occurs when turning left and braking..

So guess it will be fixed on monday..

Cheers!

  • 2 weeks later...

Today I went down to CnC, when I started my car the Low Coolant warning came on..

Went to CnC, left the car there..2 hours later I got a call from the SA telling me that the water pump is leaking and that the squealing sound is linked to the steering linkage and not the brakes..

Was told that the car must be left there overnight for them to fix the water pump issue and to do more tests on the steering..

I only have got 17k Mileage and already having all these problems?? Never had any problems on any other car I have owned..

Anyway I made some noise and the manager will be contacting me soon..lets see what they can offer or compensate me with :)

Just to update you guys, my car will have to be there for another day..3 days total..CnC cannot seem to fix the squealing sound issue..They have no idea where it's coming from or whats causing it..

Pushing to get a replacement car or taxi vouchers..

Could be:

1. wheel bearings but the mechs at C&C should have picked it up.

2. bushings for the strut arms/ steering linkages, etc.

3. poor fitting brake cylinder/actuator.

4. visually inspect the shock absorbers.

The above is not extensive but it's what comes to the top of my head.

Don't rule out the right side bushings or linkages - there are related after all.

Please fill us in on what the fault actually is - thanks.

Thanks for the heads up SlowStig, as of now the brakes have been checked thoroughly and they are not causing the issue.

The issue is actually when steering left at speeds above 30km/h the front right side wheel area has a very loud squealing sound as if metal is touching metal it gets even louder when the brakes are applied and its still in the slight left position..At low speeds below 30km/h the sound occurs when the steering is turned slightly left and when brakes are applied..so as long as the steering is towards the left, the sound occurs..even louder when the brakes are applied :)

I also remembered that when I collected the car from the service centre after the first 15k Service, I remembered parking the car in reverse and when I turned the steering wheel while the car was moving very slowly, there were a few loud thud sounds and I could feel the thuds on the steering wheel..I really don't know if its related to the issue..

CnC will be doing more testing tomorrow mainly on the steering.

I have gotten a temporary replacement and it's a C180K :)

They gave me a full tank as well :D

I will definitely give a detailed report as to what the issue is as soon as I have received the info :)

Ask if they applied some grease on the brake pad shims. even though the new generation ones are rubberized, better to cover all bases.

Brakes have been ruled out but I will ask the SA if they did that :)

I got my car back today and I have attached the report...Now CnC tells me its a rotor issue so they skimmed the rotors and the rotors look very very ugly and worn out..

When I was on the way home and when I applied the brakes, the brakes started knocking..so I tested it and the harder I depressed the brakes the louder the knocking sound gets..I can feel the pulsating knocking effect on the brake pedal itself..

I am really very disappointed at the quality of service even though the repairs were done by a "Senior Technician"..I have to send the car back in tomorrow again..they told me they have a temporary replacement car ready for me..

If they can skim your rotors, then why can't they skim the rotors for others?

I asked them once if they could skim the rotors rather than replace them. They started giving me a lecture on safety and brake biting point, blah, blah, blah.....

I do not think it's your rotors. As yours is a new car, ask them to replace the rotors with brand new ones. If you want to be cheeky, you can tell them that they can get original Merc parts cheaper at Goldenlink Auto.  :D

As you have a replacement car, tell them to take their time to fix completely and now from now on only communicate with you through emails. The service executives tend to be their old bird mechanics, so tell them to get their supervisors into the loop. You'll now have an irrefutable paper trail of your complaints and their inability to fix it.

I hope you filled the red bottom part of the form in and shoved it in the faces of their "dedicated diagnostic team".

I made so much noise hahaha...spoke directly to the manager..

I even told them to give me the email to their german office and was told me no need do that.. could tell they were scared..

Yeah I told CnC not to give me back the car till everything is fixed :)

I remembered when I collected it today I asked if I had to pay anything, the service advisor told me car still brand new all under warranty..so I'm going to tell them then change the rotors to new ones when I send my car in again tomorrow :)

They even gave me a brake test report..but I have no clue on how to read it..it's just some numbers..

Skimming the rotors make them look so worn out and old..no longer shiny..

Never knew that my first conti car experience was going to be this bad..haha

No worries, the parents are reading our forum. Just curious, when hand over the car back to you, did you test drive it on the spot??

did you break in your brake pads?

Yes I did for 1000km actually..haha

And im not a heavy braker..

Yes I drove it one round around that area and there were no issues, the knocking sound only came 10 mins into my journey home only when the brakes got warmed up :)

Even this morning when I left home there was no knocking sound, the car felt great..only as I was about to reach Alexandra Road then the issue started occurring..

And even the service advisor got worried when he tested it with me..He says it's definitely not the ABS kicking in as the knocking comes at the very last moment just before the car comes to a complete stop and when the pedal is depressed past a certain point..

Well, I will keep everyone updated about the issue :)

Strange!! I guess slam it hard for at least 10 times might solves the problem :)

It could be your ABS. The ESP might be receiving different input signals from the various wheel sensors thus causing the brakes to bite at various points in quick braking. (That does make a knocking sound.)

Try switching off your ESP and replicating the same conditions and then try braking. Safety caveats apply when switching off your ESP.

I'm not a subscriber to the breaking in your brake pads. They should work the moment they're on.

What you want to be wary about is if they were installed correctly i.e. the pins holding the pads, the pads holder, brake wear sensor, etc.

Anyway, keep us posted & good luck.

That's harsh..lol

That's what I was thinking too but the service advisor told me that "the calipers seem to be biting and letting go"..isn't that due to the ABS?? I just kept quiet and said to get it fixed :)

Regarding the brake pads, it's been 11k km before this issue started occurring, I never  issues before other than having the pads resitted 2 days after installing them due to some pad movement sounds..

I will wait and see how it goes, I was told I could collect the car by today but I doubt that will happen because till now I have received no news or updates regarding my car..

Ah well I got a temporary c180k which is really fun to drive, the engine is so aggressive in sound..haha

Hi, just collected my car and what can I say..CnC did a great job..gotta give it to them after all that noise making and problems :)

Apparently the issue was that since I took the AMG styling package, the brakes have got a plastic clip on, "Mercedes Benz", logo that does absolutely nothing but is just for styling..

So the mechanics were cracking their heads as to what was wrong..they took off both the front brakes and opened them up to diagnose them but they could not find anything wrong..They even tightened everything but nothing was loose..

Then their attention shifted to the clip on "Mercedes Benz" logo..they removed the logo and tested and that's when they knew what was causing the problem..haha

Something so small making such a big issue..The clip on plastic logo was apparently hitting on the brake caliper when the brakes were applied, I don't know how its possible maybe some expansion of the metal clip or something like that..they managed to tighten it somehow..maybe they changed it I am not sure..

Anyways all the issues have been resolved and i'd like to thank everyone for their inputs :)

Cheers!

I suspect the knocking comes from the skimmed rotors. Did occur to me once too. but went away after 2 days of driving. but since its under warranty. press them for a replacement.

a disc rotor shouldn't be shiny on the contact surface. if it does. it means the brake disc is glazed. damaged by constant pressure applied over a long period of time.
