Parktronic is just like a reverse sensor, its detect objects!! I think u hv answered yr own question. There are aftermarket products and installation is possible.

Parktronic is installed in the newer W204/W212/W222 mercs.

Parktronic has sensors in the front AND the back.

If it is just installed in the back, it is call Quick Park.

Note, if you have a rear display with distance meter (digits), it is a non-merc sensor, i.e., not Quick Park.

It can be retrofitted, I did so (W211). Very troublesome!

 1. You have to drill 4 holes at the front, 6 holes in the back. If you already have fake non-merc sensors at the back, good luck, the position don't tally, you have to putty and cover up! Finally, spray to match your bumper.
 2. You need to remove your dashboard and drill holes to install the front distance display. ($3-400 labour easily)
 3. At this point, remember to hook up the wiring harness to the rear of the dashboard, through the celling to the back.
 4. Now, you need to cut your celling fabric to install the the rear distance display. Most fabric shop don't dare to to do for you because the roof will sag after cutting.
 5. Surprise bit, you need to buy new a) gear shift wood surround OR B) front control panel to include the new Parktronic off/on button.
 6. Code in the system (optional), and it will not pop up faults during checkup.

FYI, there are newer aftermarket "parktronic" sensors that are less complicated, easier, and cheaper to install now. If your car already comes with a reverse sensor, be it aftermarket or factory fitted, I've been told by the workshop that they can just install the front distance sensor without affecting your reverse ones.

Mine is a sensor at the front with a proximity meter that increases as you get closer to the front obstacle.

The aftermarket one works exactly the same way.

Oh i see, do you find it useful? Imagine at junction where pedestrians walk pass the sensors...pretty irritating right?

I find it extremely useful especially when parking head-in as my front estimation is terrible. Usually when pedestrians walk pass the sensors will not beep unless they are very close like those Orchard Road types... If you find it irritating you can always switch it off at a press of a button on the centre console. Switch it back on after you cleared the junction.

I understand that's how factory fitted unit works, but is it the same for aftermarket... I mean with a on/off switch?

The aftermarket system also has an on/off switch but it won't be located on the centre console. For the system I saw, the on/off switch was located at the LED distance indicative lights.

Front sensors also help for those tight car park ramps. From the indicator I know how close I am to the wall.
